Like many non-Christians, I was offended by the statement made by Alabama Governor Robert Bentley referring to only “Christians” being his “brothers and sisters.” While it is only the shared opinion of Governor Bentley and likeminded Christians, they are a majority, which is why I find Governor Bentleys’ statement so disturbing.
In the wake of the violence in Tucson Arizona, one would think it would make people, especially our elected officials reflect on the significance of their role as our leaders and rise above the petty notions of misplaced brotherhood. America was founded by several nations, of immigrants trying to escape the European Reformation.
The statement made by the Governor of Alabama shows a division in America that places too much significance on Religious affiliation. Rather than focus on our similarities. We are all of the same nation. We are all flesh and blood and born of the same molecular substance. In the grand scheme of things, we all call earth home. Do the facts not make us brethren in some way?
