The Xmas Purge is Official at the Los Angeles Times

Our annual Christmas purge of employees at the Los Angeles Times is officially set for the end of the fourth quarter, with eighteen to be eliminated in the pressroom. If we’re downsizing in the pressroom then other departments at the newspaper will be doing likewise. Pictured below is our vice-president of the local union, International Brotherhood of Teamsters-Graphic Communication Conference Local 140-N. On the left Keith Denson with Fred Kirby at his side.

From Keith Denson:

"Well members of the local 140-N, We learned today in negotiations there will be 18 more employees laid off sometime around the first part of January. Also the company does not want to give us much of anything. Why should they have gotten everything they have wanted including a fight among ourselves. Its the unions fault for everything not the company not Russ Newton come on wake the fuck up.
Sincerely, Keith Denson"

What is there to "give"? They used it up in the bonus plan that the "impartial" judge let them spend across the glorious company.

As for Russ; his ilk will pay a piper some day; it is just never (n-e-v-e-r) soon enough.

As for waking the fudge up; shouldn't it be: Merry Fucking Christmas, and Happy Fucking New Year?

You are so right "Anonymous", just a knee jerk, dirty diatribe in response to a dirty way of doing business. My apologies if I offended.

Language appropriate:
Merry Christmas and/or Happy New Year.

I am sorry that our management team does not understand the premise that, "no partnership can fructify without candor on both sides."

Strong language is fine but vulgar is not!

(Disagree as you may, just keep it clean and stay on topic. No profanity, and no name calling.)

What part of collective BAGAINING don't you understand? Nobody GIVES anything, both sides bargain for everything. It's a competition. Do you ever hear the Lakers cry that the Bulls did not GIVE them any points.

And NO, the union is not at fault. It's the amatuer knuckleheads that thought they were smart and important enough to negotiate a contract that bear most all the blame.

Hey, Eddie Baby, this blog is going to start rockin' again. Taking the restrictions off and allowing anonymous clowns to spout off is just the kind of crap I love!

What did you really get for your union dues, except hot air, finger pointing and name calling? More time should have been spent trying to get a contract that provided some protection but they got what was most important to the union...dues check off. The press people are getting it from both sides, and paying for it!

ANON 6, why do you cowards still contribute and hide your identity?
Grown men acting like little girls!
That is why we are in the situation we are!
~~~~~~~YOUR QUESTION~~~~~~~~~~
What did you really get for your union dues, except hot air, finger pointing and name calling?
~~~~~~~~~~MY ANSWER~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ask yourself what you still have in this economy, not what did you get. Unless you are in the 1% of rich America you are getting screwed like all of us!

Our Union has prevented this greedy corporation from raping you beyond your own comprehension!
Yeah we have suffered just like all our brothers and sisters in the newspaper printing trade.

I have met with them each year at our conferences and believe me we have managed to avoid the levels of decimation faced by our Union family.

Non-Union employees are no longer accruing vacation, we are.
1 out of two shops have faced work furloughs, union or not, we have not.

8 out of 10 shops have bargained concessions in wages, we have not!

When all other Non-Union departments, just like our shop, had their wages frozen, our bargaining unit continued to receive 2% lump sum payments.

When the service shops were laying off employees and brought them back at lower wages, pressroom employees were returning with recall rights receiving the same pay and benefits as when they left.

These are what we managed to accomplish without full support of the employees! Imagine if we had full support and stopped helping the greed mongers that laugh all the way to the bank.....with what could be, YOUR MONEY!

Have at it Anonymous cowards, $.02 and Grandspud.......enlighten me.

Wouldn't it be easier to get your mother to read the comments and delete the expletives?

Hey Granpud, we were smart. Because we recognized the Serpent the minute he spoke in the Garden.
And we are wise to the Garden Weasels who speak in many tongues on Ed's Blog to try and confuse our brother and sisters.

Dude... If you were smart you would have gotten yourself an education and kept pace with the world. Fact is, you're in the position you're in because you ignored progress.

There really are no villains behind what you're experiencing. Your union is not made up of bad folks, and your company is not made up of bad folks. The world has changed and it is no longer 1980, regardless of how hard you squint your eyes.
