Los Angeles Times Throws Another Employee Under the Bus

As I pondered out-loud early this morning regarding the employees of Operations at the Los Angeles Times being systematically eliminated, another long time journeyman was terminated from the press room today. That's four press room employees let go this year alone, two were placed into the so called job pool, I know of no one from Operations that ever returned to the Los Angeles Times that was in the job pool. If you do, please enlighten me with this information, as everyone I have asked has answered the same way, no one returns from the job pool at the Los Angeles Times.

I don't know about you, but this stinks of age discrimination as the company rids itself of long time, higher paid workers for younger lower paid workers.

What's your take on this?

I am not bitching here...but you asked. Sixty years old, twenty-eight years working for the Times California Community News.Laid off last November.
Age discrimination? I was the elder, so who knows?
It's a sad situation no matter how you look at it.

Back in the early '90s when the LAT and other mega-corporpations were doing this, it was known as the 20-40-60 rule: 20 years of service or more, 40 yeasr or older, and $60,000 a year or more. I remember the Black Tuesday when 200 people were cut from the advertising sales force. It cut a broad swath through the department. Did they deserve it? Maybe some, but definately not all of them. Back in the '90s there were many shifts in business thinking. In earlier days, sharehodlers understood that company ownership and profitability were a gamble, and there was an ebb and flow. In teh '90s, stockholders expected a Return On Investment no matter what - they were not willing to go without dividends during the lean times (and yes, the early '90s in L.A. were VERY LEAN, even though some don't remember it that way).

You should do a bit more research before you claim “age discrimination” I do know the reasons for the termination and it certainly didn’t have anything to do with age.
