Art Sanchez Rest in Peace

We received sad news this afternoon that long time Los Angeles Times pressman Art Sanchez Jr. passed away due to injuries suffered last week. Art was a really fun colleague, that made work fun with his joking nature, and calm demeanor. He was but fifty-six years old and survived by his father Art Sanchez Sr. a brother and sister. He will be sorely missed at the newspaper.

Another OC Pressman dead before his time. Take a bow LA Times Management.

Are you really that ignorant to think times management causes the death of the press people. Yes poor Art died before his time “ God bless him” but it sure wasn’t his job that killed him. If you knew him you would know that and most likely wouldn’t write such a dumb ass comment.

most of the pressman hired did not have pot to pee in until the job fell into thier lap. it was like winning the lotto. no skills or education needed and the pay was great with benefits. longshoreman also. i worked there 33 years and considered myself very lucky.comment on blaming management goes to show you the dumb dumbs, and plenty of them, that got hired in pressroom.

Art was truly a great guy. I was an OC pressman for 32 years. Art was always real easy going, and never in a bad mood. I look back and really believe the company treated us well. I agree that the comment blaming management shows the mentality of many of the pressman. That`s too bad because it`s a good job.

Let's not forget the two pressman who have died of heart attacks since coming to LA. The death by a thousand cuts in going according to plan. Changing shifts to put more heavy traffic for the long commute. Reduction of crew manning form 9 and 11 man crews to 4 or 5 while workload has increased. Breaks that are a joke. Not enough time for meals due to a 200 yard walk from a time clock to the cafeteria. Intimidating workers with dismissal due to poor maintenance.
Cameras everywhere with the BS excuse of looking for sabotage.
Increase in Production runs per crew at a time of an aging workforce. Bait and switch on a retirement portfolio that is frozen while Tribune collects the earnings and send its workers to the poor house.
Go down to D or C and grab a real newspaper. Then look at the Times and see the real truth what these Clowns have done to the Times and it's employees. Get out the pot Froggy.

Yes you are right, most pressman didn't have a pot to pee in and when you get done with them they won't even have that. But the ones who landed a great job because of the " Noblesse Oblige" of Otis Chandler, not the philosophy of a blood sucking scab, have had the opportunity to better their family's life. Yes we were like Mayberry. Treated all like family and not a Chinese factory worker Greg! If your on the floor why not sign your name for some brownie points. Why? Because your either Russ or Greg.

By the way these were highly paid and sought out jobs. You had to be lucky or know someone. They didn't just fall into ones lap.
And speaking of two lucky guys without a Semester of school between them landing a high paying job. Why are we paying Greg to just walk around and catch people sitting down. Is this a highly skilled position?

Art God Bless you. I know you in a better place. Living with the disease of Alcoholism is no easy task. Your life is always out of control. And unless you stop cause you want to. Looking forward to the next drink and not being able to predict the outcome is a tough situation. The point is a job like ours is high stress. Some need more than food to deal with this stress. Art will be missed. Things happen for a reason. God always has the final say so in all.

Art was a good friend of mine. I was his neighbor. I was hanging out with this guy damn near everyday. He once (ok maybe like 10 times) told me about his interview, and what they told him. Something like "just so you know, if we hire you..you're gonna get a divorce, become an alcoholic, and work every holiday" Art responded "where do I sign?"
He was proud of his job. He was actually excited to going back to work that Monday. I'm gonna miss this guy

I agree Art had a responsibility to manage his life. However, the fact was, he was a kid. How his supervisor allowed him to work with two swollen eyes, a deformed face and reduced metal capacity is beyond me. The guy was a "train wreck" when he showed up for work and continued to swell. Why did not his supervisor decide he was not "fit" to work and demand he be taken to emergency care???? Maybe it was not a business responsibility, but F*** that, we need to be human and compassionate despite union-management problems. We've spent decades together. Let us remember and cherish that!

Your all a bunch of idiots. Art was a good friend of mine. How could all of you with you be so thoughtless and disrespectful. To not realize that the obvious intention of this article. Was to pay much deserved RESPECT to a dedicated employee of many years. Not for a bunch of ignorant, whining, BITCHES to use as a gossip forum ! Vivian

I would like to make it clear. That my last comment was not directed towards Richard Olmedo and especially not Arts neighbor and very good friend.(which I happen to know very well myself). Surrey neighbor! Your comment wasn't posted yet when I posted NY previous comment.
All the rest of you should be ashamed of yourselves. I spent so many mornings visiting with Art before he went to work. Even more late nights. When he got home from work. For for years straight and too many visits to count. Art never said anything bad about anyone. He took such GREAT PRIDEin his job and never complained. In all that time he never said anything negative about , his job or anyone from work. IM sure he must of at some time or another had some kind of problem .A perfect job seemed IMPOSSIBLE.. That made me respect Art. That he was intelligent and had sense enough to not bring the negativity from work to our visits and make himself look bad talking about people. So our visits were always laid back, relaxed and fun. Art was COOL LIKE THAT.! I think that he was a very descent honorable man and he must of been professional too. Considering he managed to hold his position with the company forso many years. Until the very end.! I think its sad he gave you guys so much respect in life and in return you guys .You guys disrespect him in his passing by talking about his personal life and things that are irrelevant. In comparison to all the years of hard work he gave the company. As a matter of fact. Art once corrected me when I once referred to someone as a "Co Worker". He said " I don't really care fire the tern co.worker.. I spend most of my time and have spent so many years with these guys . I like to think of then as extended family" Whenever he would tell me a story about work. He always refereed to the guys as"my Buddy from work " or "my partner from work". Art prided himself with the fact that he worked hard, maintained his work ethics and adequately sustained his job for so many years.
I also spent time with Art on Sunday evening. He was looking forward to going back on Monday. He was even worried that they might give him a hard and send him home. I'll be honest though. He did also say "If I go in tomorrow and they give me a hard time and send me home. I'm going to tell them PARTY ON ! Come home and rest. " It was about 7:30 Sunday evening. He asked me to download him a song he wanted to hear before he went in and went to bed. I did, He listened, said Thanks I'll see you tomorrow as I watched him walk into the house. Never to be seen alive again. That is devastating and tragic to those who lioved and cared for Art. He will be missed by many. So like I said you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Art gave you guys too much credit. He should have called you CO WORKERS !!!!!

Art and I were high school friends and stayed in touch by calling each other on birthdays , I went to call him and discovered his phone is disconnected and then checked the internet and saw this, I m shocked and deeply saddened. Does any one have the cause of why he passed ? I m going to try and reach his Dad.
