Austin American-Statesman ends Spanish-language publication

The Austin American-Statesman is ending publication of its Ahora Si Spanish-language newspaper Oct. 11, the company said.

The Statesman said all its 200-plus employees would be eligible to take a voluntary severance package.

“This gives our employees a choice for those who were mulling retirement or a change in careers,” Statesman publisher Susie Biehle said. “This also allows us to better align our resources around the areas of most importance to our readers and advertisers.”
Statesman management will decide on staffers’ buyout applications based on business and news coverage needs, Biehle said.

Ahora Si was launched in 2004. In spring, GateHouse Media bought the Statesman from Cox Media Group for $47.5 million.
