Just heard from the Square that layoffs are happening today, no details on how many employees are losing their jobs at the newspaper? As the facts are given I will keep you informed of what's happening at Tribune West (formerly Times Mirror Square).
Ed
UPDATE: 9:30 p.m.
I was informed this afternoon that I was incorrect in stating that five people were let go today at the Square. Yes, we are five people lighter than yesterday, and five people no longer work for the Los Angeles Times, but they were NOT laid off. How was it defined for me; Due too restructuring, five positions were eliminated. I may just be a dumb pressman, but when someone's employment is eliminated, I call that a layoff.
I looked up layoff and it seems the term layoff is usually a temporary job loss, so I was indeed incorrect in my word usage, the employees that were let go, fired, terminated, eliminated, will not be returning to the Los Angeles Times.
Would enjoy hearing what others think about this matter.

Hey !!! I thought their where not going to be any layoffs until next year!!!!...Oh well tribune lies again
ReplyDeleteHey Ed the word was ... usually ...not with tribune
ReplyDeletejust one question ....are they on the payroll
ReplyDeleteHey guys, I manage my own business so I know the drill. If budgets are tight, and I need some new talent, I have to sacrifice some of my current staff to hire new ones. Just like in Sports, if I need a two new outfielders, I got to cut two existing players. Sounds like 5 were hired and 5 were fired. That's the way business works in a tight budget environment.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with comment no four .Just maybe they were ready to get let go because of poor performance and ready to go. Probably whiners grumpy and alot of issues. PEACE THATS BUSINESS
ReplyDeleteAhhhh... yes I see now what the problem is ....the last Two( 2 ) anonymous folks making blind accusations without knowing the FACTS... especially # 5 just reading his diatribe explains it all
ReplyDeleteLadies and gentlemen these are people who lost their jobs the the person on the blog that says thats business knows nothing about these human beings and calls them whiners get mental help you need it you should be let go for being so brainless in your comments and you say peace, your mind can't be at peace these people might have children to feed bills to pay who ever they are I'm sorry they lost a good job Rick Hernandez O.C Operator
ReplyDeleteWell, let's see. I know all 5 of the new hires and all 5 of the employees who were let go. To use the sports analogy of comment #4, the dept had to eliminate five utility infielders (A/V guy, photographer, etc.) to sign five front-line starting pitchers (Creative Mgr, etc.). Different skill sets were needed, but they had to stick to the 25-man roster. Nick Colleti doing the same thing right now with the Dodgers.
ReplyDeleteAnd did the Dodgers make the Series ???... Oh by the way Rick that guy needs more than mental help....maybe some ECT ( ElectroConvulsiveTherapy )
ReplyDeleteIn business with thousands of people. Sometimes you have to weed out some. If you guys had your own business you would know this.It is not easy but you have got to do this.Usally it all works out for both sides.AND I DO HAVE peace sorry RICK HERNANDEZ YOUR COWORKER
ReplyDeleteThe point is these are people human beings its not the Dodgers and if you own your business that's great these are workers trying to make a living don't think that the company can't run without any of us it will run and nobody too important to keep except in your own minds its the oh well attitude opinion about times workers at a critical cross roads and when you say peace look up the definition your not wishing it on times employee's Rick Hernandez O.C. Pressroom
ReplyDeleteAnyway one wants to "candy coat" it, the slips are still pink!!!
ReplyDeleteRick , when do you usually begin and end your sentences ???? Your writing is embarrassing.
ReplyDeletethats why I work in the pressroom with the rest of you whats your excuse. Rick
ReplyDeleteGreat one Rick LOL
ReplyDeleteWell ladies and gentlemen, let's called the tribune croonies who they really are. Let's call them Chicago's version of Al Queda or the Teleban that wants to destroy not only the LA Times but the people that work there. Ofcourse the Teleban wants to ban freedom of information propagada by the Times. Or better yet, let's call the Tribune Corporate gang descendants from Al Copone's henchmen. Hold all the Valentime's cards to prevent the massacre. Our hope now rest with the local billionares willing to buy the Times.
