General Otis (and Otis Chandler) must be rolling in their graves. For the first time in a long while, workers at the Los Angeles Times have voted to affiliate with a union.

The workers in the Los Angeles Times pressroom have voted to be represented by a union for the first time in nearly four decades. Here's my video report:
The press operators may have stabbed themselves in the back
In a move which is not going to help the Times, the newspaper's press operators voted 140-131 to be represented by a union, the Teamsters. This is a reflection of the unpopularity of Hiller, far beyond his depth in Los Angeles, and could impede a sale of the paper. The press operators, calculating that Tribune will stay in control, may have stabbed themselves in the back.

Officials at the National Labor Relations Board are scheduled to count ballots this morning to see whether Los Angeles Times press operators have authorized union representation by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.As many as 300 of the production employees were eligible to vote Thursday and Friday on whether to unionize the newspaper's two printing facilities, in downtown Los Angeles and Costa Mesa.
