Los Angeles Times to Shed 75 in Newsroom Today

Thanks to the sharp eye of Robert Ivan from Meta Printer I was just informed of a breaking story at my own newspaper, the Los Angeles Times. Thank you Robert for bringing this to my attention.

From Mayrav Saar at Fishbowl Los Angeles:

BREAKING: LAT Expects 75 Newsroom Cuts Today

L.A. Times' staffers are bracing for an expected announcement of 75 newsroom layoffs later this afternoon. More as we get it.

[UPDATE: Layoffs, expected from the Washington D.C.
consolidation, might not be announced today, but more than D.C. jobs are
expected to be cut soon. Again, we'll let you know as we get it.]

From Kevin Roderick at LAObserved:

Incredibly, deep new cutbacks at L.A. Times

I've emailed Hartenstein and Times spokeswoman Nancy Sullivan some questions about what has changed since August and the extent of this round of cutbacks. My sources say the newsroom staffing level is headed to about 650, but I don't know if that includes the decimation of the Washington bureau expected by many there after the November election. Associate Editor for features Leo Wolinsky is
holding a meeting with his staff shortly amid strong rumors that he is leaving.
Stay tuned.

And Mark Lacter at LA Biz Observed was contacted by a reader over the lack of articles by Los Angeles Times staff in yesterday's Calendar Section, which will be the newest trend at all newspapers of the future.

Sign of the Times

A reader notes that Sunday's LAT Calendar section had only three staff-written pieces. Everything else looks like it was farmed out.
