The Los Angeles Times print version is continuing its spin
into the black hole of becoming a memory as the digital version gains momentum
for the delivery of news. As circulation continues to leak away, no one seems
to have the answer to ebb this flow, which is possibly the reason four managers
in the Circulation Department worked their last shifts on January 31st,
2013, with severance packages.
Employees working in the Operations Department are on edge
as they have been told by management that all units are being evaluated, units
are the employees, for their value to the company. Call in sick too often,
decrease your value; have a kidney transplant, decrease your value; acquire
Lupus, decrease your value.
Pressmen and women earn almost $35.00 per hour, a press
operator almost $40.00 per hour, and all employees with over twenty-five years
of service earn five weeks of vacation. Last month three pressmen and women
were let go for various reasons, all journey-persons. One press operator was
demoted from $40.00 per hour to $35.00 per hour, but is still employed.
How many additional journeymen and journey-women will be
replaced by $15.00 per hour employees this year, as the newspaper attempts to stay afloat?

ReplyDeletepart time journeyman cut to 0 hours a week when the union allowed us 3 shifts per week. in hawaii the union has a clause for part time grocery workers witch gurantees them 21 hours a week.
