Digiday: Confusion reigns after coming of GDPR

Rampant confusion and a myriad of approaches are apparent a month after the dawning of GDPR, Digiday reports.
GDPR, General Data Protection Regulation, is the European Union’s new set of rules aimed at giving EU citizens more choice and control over data. Organizations are now required to be sure personal data is collected legally, and those who collect data it will need to protect it or be hit with fines. GDPR’s enforcement began May 25.
“Pretty much everyone is breaking the law right now,” Denmark-based media analyst Thomas Baekdal told Digiday. “There is not a single consent dialogue box anywhere that is easy to understand. We (publishers) have not really realized how much this is going to hit us. Everyone is trying to make things work the way they used to, rather than thinking about privacy.”
Widely different approaches to consents, opt-in and opt-out messages, and cookie-banner messages are popping up. A lack of clarity in the regulation is dogging many, Digiday reports.
The BBC and others report that Tronc and Lee Enterprises sites were blocked in the EU due to GDPR’s implementation.
