Albany’s Times Union has launched Local First, a weekly newspaper that focuses on local news and shopping, with the help of the region’s advertising community, the paper reported. Six differing editions of the weekly publication will be printed at the Times Union and mailed to consumers every week. The Advertiser in Rensselaer County keeps its name and is getting a design overhaul.
The new publication will have stories and announcements connected to each area and content from the Times Union. "We're very excited about our new product. These weekly editions fill a void for residents and advertisers in our local communities. They will become the go-to resource for information on events throughout the region," said Todd J. Peterson, the publisher of Local First.
The paper will be one of the biggest print vehicles by reach in the region, starting with a circulation of 188,000.
The Times Union's average paid weekday circulation is about half of what it was in 2008, according to Albany Business Review. Other papers in the region also experienced drops in line with industry trends. The Daily Gazette in Schenectady saw a circulation drop of 27 percent. The Record in Troy had a drop of 81 percent, and The Saratogian’scirculation has decreased 69 percent, the Business Review said.
