The Cecil Whig (Cecil County, Maryland) announced that it’s cutting its Monday print edition and is now down to two print editions, Wednesday and Friday. The paper cited a large increase in newsprint costs following tariffs approved by the Trump administration.
“Unfortunately, since the fourth quarter of 2017, we have locally experienced significant increased costs, up nearly 30 percent, related to this imported newsprint,” wrote David Fike, president of the Whig’s parent company, Adams Publishing Group Media of Chesapeake. “At current pricing, these tariffs will add nearly $500,000 annually in added expense to our business. Newsprint represents the second largest expense item behind employees for our business, resulting in significant decreases to our bottom-line,” he wrote.
Fike and numerous other newspaper executives recently lobbied more than 60 senators in Washington, asking them to speak against the tariffs.
The paper also announced that it will be starting a sports recap e-edition on Mondays in the near future.
The Whig’s sister paper, The Star Democrat in Easton, is also stopping its Monday edition, and will have five printed editions.
