Daily news outlet launching in Memphis

A seven-days-a-week news outlet called The Daily Memphian will start publishing in fall, the Memphis Daily News reported.

The venture will rely on seasoned area journalists and a not-for-profit funding model.

The nonprofit Memphis Fourth Estate owns and operates The Daily Memphian; however, the newsroom operates independently of Memphis Fourth Estate's influence and will not know donor names or pledges, according to The Daily Memphian’s website.

Details of venture were announced July 16.

The Daily Memphian begins with a staff of 27.

Eric Barnes, publisher of The Daily News, will be president and executive editor of The Daily Memphian.

“It’s important to say it’s not The Daily News getting bigger. It’s a whole separate entity,” Barnes said.

The Daily News will go back to being a primary source of public records, listings and notices, ending its email edition, the paper reported.

The Memphis News, the weekly publication launched a decade ago, will move to a similar role with circulation only in the communities outside Memphis.
