LA Weekly owner sues co-owners; new LA weekly on tap

David Welch, an owner of Semanal Media, the company that bought the LA Weekly in fall 2017, is suing the other Semanal owners, the LA Times reports.

The suit claims the other owners have mismanaged the paper and wrongly booted Welch of management.

“We believe the allegations in this complaint are categorically unfounded,” said LA Weekly Publisher and Chief Executive Brian Calle, a defendant in the suit, according to the LA Times. The paper couldn’t reach the other defendants.

One aim of the suit is to dissolve the company, the LA Times reported.

Also among the recent woes of the paper was a boycott organized by former writers after the 2017 sale of the paper. Music writer Jeff Weiss, one of the boycott’s organizers, and other former LA Weekly staffers now plan to launching a new paper, called LAnd. Their aim is to get the paper going by the end of this year, The Outline
reports.
