Demolition of former Times-Picayune building in New Orleans started the
first week of April, the paper reported. A $29 million Drive Shack golf and
entertainment attraction will go in its place.
A group of
investors purchased the building for $3.5 million in fall 2016.
Demolition
of the 1968 facility will be done by September, says developer Peter Aamodt,
the paper reported.
Workers
will be cleaning soil and groundwater contamination at the location, according
to records The Times-Picayune accessed, the paper reported.
Areas of
the property showed levels of organic compounds in the soil and groundwater and
lead and arsenic in the groundwater, an environmental assessment report from
the firm Terracon said. The report said contaminants weren’t a risk for entering
water bodies or contacting people as concrete covers the ground.
The report
says it’s “unknown” but “assumed” that the contaminants came from printing and
other activities at the paper.
The
Times-Picayune is now based in the Warehouse District, with satellite offices
elsewhere in the area.
