GateHouse Media will merge 50 of its weekly newspapers in Massachusetts into 18,
according to an inside memo posted online, masslive.com reported.
The move was set to start the first week of
June, the memo said. Dan Kennedy, a professor at Northeastern University
and a blogger for Media Nation, posted the memo.
“In many
cases, the new title retains the original publication name. For example, The
Tewksbury Advocateand the Wilmington Advocatewill become The
Tewksbury-Wilmington Advocate covering Tewksbury
and Wilmington ,”
the memo said.
The memo
said GateHouse was not decreasing the number of communities it serves or
reducing the amount of local news coverage readers receive. The memo provided a
list of the papers affected.
