What is Juneteenth?


Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. NBC’s Janell Ross helps us understand the origins of the holiday and what it means today.







On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger stood on the balcony of the Ashton Villa in Galveston and said, in part, "In accordance with a proclamation, all slaves are free."
