On June 25, Google announced a licensing program to pay
publishers for “high-quality content” for a news experience launching later in
2020. The program will help participating publishers monetize their content
through an enhanced storytelling experience that lets people go deeper into
more complex stories, stay informed and be exposed to a world of different
issues and interests, says Google. The program is starting with local and
national publications in Germany ,
Australia and Brazil .
The product
will launch first on Google News and Discover. Google plans to sign more
partners in the coming months, says the tech giant.

has an analysis piece on Google’s move here, with the headline "'Google paying
publishers' is more about PR than the needs of the news industry."
