2 Oct, 1944 World War II Warsaw Uprising

1944 : The Warsaw Uprising ends when the few surviving Polish rebels surrender to German forces.

2 Oct, 1974 U.S.A. Cannabis

1974 : New studies in America by Dr. Robert Heath of Tulane University Medical School, New Orleans. have revealed that smoking cannabis can cause brain damage. Cannabis or marijuana is in common use in the US with an estimated one in every eight Americans 25 million people who have smoked the drug.

2 Oct, 1928 U.S.A. Opium

1928 : 3,000 cups of Opium with a street value in excess of $1,500,000 have been seized from the Dollar Liner Steamer , President Harrison at Jersey City docks and a number of crew including the captain have been charged with attempted smuggling. This is the largest single haul of smoking Opium ever made at a US port.

2 Oct, 1933 U.S.A. NRA

1933 : President Roosevelt has asked the NRA to reduce codal hours to 30 to increase the number of jobs available and share the work and the wages more evenly.

2 Oct, 1942 World War II Stalingrad

1942 : The Russian red army is fighting back house to house fighting in Stalingrad as part of a counterattack, this is coupled with Soviet offensives outside of the city and an increased presence of aircraft who are having greater success at shooting down German aircraft.

2 Oct, 1949 U.S.A. Strike

1949 : 500,000 CIO Steel workers have closed down the nations foundries, steel and Iron mills demanding pensions and better working conditions and wages, they now join the 400,000 coal miners on strike bringing the total on strike to nearly one million workers.

2 Oct, 1962 The Tonight Show

1962 : Johnny Carson premiered as the new host of The Tonight Show.

2 Oct, 1963 Haiti Hurricane Flora

1963 : Hurricane Flora a massive storm kills 6,000 in Haiti, Cuba, Trinidad, and Tobago, Grenada, This was one of the worst storms on record for deaths and damage.

2 Oct, 1967 U.S.A. Thurgood Marshall

1967 : Thurgood Marshall took the oath of office to become the first African American member of the US Supreme Court.

2 Oct, 1968 Mexico Student Riots

1968 : More than 25 people have been killed during a vicious gun battle in Mexico where Student riots threaten Mexico Olympics. Thousands of students had gathered to protest against the military occupation of the National Polytechnic Institute.

2 Oct, 1968 Great Britain Sextuplets

1968 : The first set of sextuplets born in Britain came as a result of a new fertility drug given to a new 30 year old mother after 10 years of trying to have a baby. One of the babies died shortly after birth but the other five are doing well at Birmingham Maternity Hospital.

2 Oct, 1971 U.S.A. Longshoremen Strikes

October 2nd, 1971 : Strikes By Miners and longshoremen cause docks and mines to close throughout the US with 140,000 on strike.

2 Oct, 1974 Study Shows Cannabis Can Kill Brain Cells

1974 : A new study has shown that the use of marijuana long term can kill human brain cells and causing personality disorders.

2 Oct, 1976 Mexico Hurricane Liza

October 2nd, 1976 : Hurricane Liza strikes at La Paz, Mexico leaving many hundreds dead and many thousand homeless as the hurricane breached the Cajoncito River.

2 Oct, 1983 England Neil Kinnock

1983 : Following a terrible showing in the spring general elections Neil Kinnock is elected as the new leader of the Labour Party.

2 Oct, 1985 England Riots

October 2nd, 1985 : In London and Liverpool gangs of black youths are continuing to fight with local police forces and rioting in areas where racial tension is at it's worst. The youths are making gasoline bombs which they are then using to firebomb shops in these areas.

2 Oct, 1985 U.S.A. Rock Hudson

1985 : The actor Rock Hudson died in his sleep, he had been suffering from the AIDS virus.
