Today in Labor History

Joe Hill was arrested on this date in Salt Lake City and later convicted on trumped-up murder charges. He was executed 21 months later despite worldwide protests and two attempts to intervene by President Woodrow Wilson. In a letter to Bill Haywood shortly before his death, he penned the famous words, “Don’t mourn – organize!”. – 1915

3,000 members of the Filipino Federation of Labor went on strike in the plantations of Oahu, Hawaii. Their ranks swelled to 8,300 as they were joined by members of the Japanese Federation of Labor. – 1920
Bruce Springsteen made an unannounced appearance at a benefit for laid-off 3M workers in Asbury Park, New Jersey. – 1986
