Last night before completing my press run I took a call from my fourteen-year-old daughter Joanna, she told me her mother would be taking her to the San Dimas Emergency Room. Joanna did not want to tell me what was wrong, so I left the Times and headed straight to the hospital.
Naturally the traffic was heavy, and it took me almost an hour to travel the thirty miles to San Dimas. As I arrived at the hospital my grandson David greeted me, he was tired and sleepy, but was alert when grandpa entered the waiting room.
Seems my daughter was experiencing a period, which last over six weeks, and notified her sister of her condition. She told me she was too embarrassed to tell me.
If you have not been to an emergency room lately, the wait can last from a few hours to an all night affair.
Joanna had a medical condition that was taken care of last night, and were headed back to see the doctor in a few minutes.
Since I already had today off from work, I will resume posting on the blog in a few hours after Joanna is feeling better.

Edward,
Do take the time to convince Joanna that she must NEVER be too embarrassed to share her conditions with her father.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery and give her my best.

Have a little respect for your daughter's privacy!!!
Anonymous,
I can agree with you to a certain degree, but perhaps posting this message could be cry for some constructive advice when it comes to a single father caring for a female child.
Would you have any besides the critism? If so, give it!

Edwardo,
Can't beleive you would put something so personal like this in your blog. What are you going to gain out of this besides disrespect ?
Put something Juicy in your blog like maybe you and Debbie smoking pot and doing drugs . . . .
God bless your Daughter. . .
You otta be ashame of yourself !

You wonder why she didnt want to tell you.... YOU open your BIG MOUTH and tell everybody about your businees.
Poor thing I hope she doesnt read this. She will really be embarrassed.
I pray that Joanna is better. It's difficult to raise a child of the opposite sex alone, this I know first-hand. Let's all be a little less critical and a little more supportive of Ed's family.
God bless you and all your family, Ed.
The reason your hospital visit was so long was because of all of the people that do not belong here in this country (illegal aliens). As for your daughter she should be with her mother, You cant teach her how to become a women anymore than she being able to teach your son how to be a man. You need to stay away from the comedy clubs and be with your kids..... Its not about you , Your entire existence should be about them. You reap what you sew, so simple , but 100 % correct. As for your daughter I feel sorry for her that her dad has to tell all the world about her problem. I personally feel you breached her trust, privacy, etc.. When do we get to see a glimpse of your medical issues? Oh she will probably inform us sooner than later, after all the apple doesnt fall far from the tree. Do you think she is going to complain about having to change your Depends and than tell everybody? You better hope not. Think next time before you write.
How many drinks did you have in you when you wrote this ? I hate to imagine you wrote this sober.

I find anonymous' advice constructive and, out of necessity, critical. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Ed,
Ouch! That's what can happen when you put yourself out there like you do. As a faithful reader of your blog, I would like to offer some friendly advice. You can tell a story without going into too much detail.
Stating that your daughter had a health scare would have sufficed. The fact that she is OK and the need for our kids to confide in us, when something is wrong, are the main points.
Keep on blogging!

Being critical of Ed, in this case, is being supportive to Ed's family.

Whether advice is constructive or not is determined by the advisee, not the advisor.

Enough, already! You can't unscramble eggs! At this point, if he doesn't realize that he screwed up by posting it, then perhaps there's no hope for his sense of judgment.
He could've deleted it (like he did "Things you can say only on Thanksgiving"), but chose not to.
So get over the shock of this post, pray that the child doesn't read it, and look for something on a more positive note in his future postings.
