Sowing Seeds for Life - Serving the people


The COVID-19 outbreak has brought a surge of clients needing food assistance to food banks across the country. Here in La Verne, California Sowing Seeds for Life, which had an average of 7,000 visitors per month, to a record 25,000 in April.

Anticipating the need our operation was moved from La Verne to the Fairplex in Pomona, two months ago.

The NHRA stepped up and allowed the food bank to employ the drag strip to usher in the people in need.

GWS relocates Lithoman press


GWS Printing Systems (GWS), the manroland Goss subsidiary for press relocations and used equipment, just finished a relocation project of a commercial Lithoman press in the Netherlands.
Thom Ringsma, owner of magazine printer Habo da Costa, based in the city of Vianen, took the opportunity to restart a closed location in Doetinchem to strengthen his printing business. At the same time, the assets of a printing plant in Weert were taken over by Ringsma. GWS Printing Systems was contracted to sell the equipment on behalf of his holding company. A used Lithoman at Weert was chosen to be moved to Doetinchem to start the production there.
In just over four months, the press was up and running again at the Doetinchem plant, according to Koenig & Bauer. The start-up and training at the new location was performed by specialists from manroland Goss Augsburg under the project management of GWS colleagues based in Waalwijk.
Senefelder Misset Doetinchem, meanwhile, has decided to contract with manroland Goss for telesupport service of their Lithoman presses in Doetinchem.

Layoffs at Gannett


Layoffs were taking place last week at Gannett, Poynter reported.

It’s not clear if the layoffs are due to the coronavirus, Poynter reports, or are part of a strategy related to the GateHouse-Gannett merger, which concluded late last year.
The number of layoffs is also not known, according to Poynter. A source did tell Poynter that the layoffs are linked to the merger.
Also in news on Gannett, billionaire Leon Cooperman sold around half of his stake in Gannett at a loss earlier in April, filings show, Business Insider reported.

Everettville mine

50,000 workers in Chicago were on strike, with 30,000 more joining in the next day. The strike brought most of Chicago’s manufacturing to a standstill. On May 3rd, Chicago cops killed four unionists. A mass meeting and demonstration was called for the 4th, in Haymarket Square, where a cop would be killed by an assailant who would never be identified. Ultimately, eight anarchists (many not even in attendance) would be tried for murder and sentenced to death. This event, known as the Haymarket Tragedy or the Haymarket Affair, would go on to be the inspiration for International Workers’ Day, celebrated on May 1st in every country in the world except the U.S. – 1886
50,000 in Chicago were on strike, the Coeur d'Alene strike continued with 1,200 getting arrested, 109 killed in Everettville mine explosion, TWU won $9.5 million in pensions, and Obama's NLRB implemented new rules for union elections.CLICK TO TWEET
The Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, miner’s strike continued, with 1,200 workers getting arrested and placed into specially erected bullpens until the strikes were broken. – 1889
An explosion at the Everettville mine in Everettville, West Virginia killed 109 miners, many of whom lie in unmarked graves to this day. – 1927
The TWU (Transport Workers Union) won $9.5 million in pensions for former Fifth Avenue Coach employees after a long court battle. – 1965
The Obama administration’s National Labor Relations Board implemented new rules to speed up unionization elections. The new rules were largely seen as a counter to employer manipulation of the law to prevent workers from unionizing. – 2012
