David Hiller on Circulation

Folks,

Today the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) is announcing our circulation numbers for the six months ending September 30. The headlines are we showed a slight increase in daily circulation (Mon-Fri) to 779,682, and our Sunday circulation decreased 5.1% to 1,112,165. We're pleased with the daily numbers, and would like to do better on Sunday. In terms of overall audience reach, the good news is that during the past twelve months our readership has remained strong with 2.2 million daily readers and 3.2 million Sunday readers. When you combine our print and interactive audiences, we reach a combined 4.9 million adults in our market each month (source: Scarborough/Nielsen NetRatings).

Sustaining the audience reach of the print newspaper, while we continue to grow online rapidly, is at the center of our priorities. Many of the recommendations of the Reinvent Committee are focused on that. When you look at the brilliant, round the clock, multimedia coverage of the fires, you see what this means in reality. We broke the news minute by minute on the Web and our online traffic tripled, and the print paper was must read. We will continue to do more and more of this.

If you have questions or want to share your thoughts, feel free to drop me or Jack Klunder a note.

David
