1927 U.S.A. Mount Rushmore

1927 : Work begins by sculptor Gutzon Borglum on the face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota. It would take another 12 years for the granite images of four of America’s most revered and beloved presidents to finish. 1919 U.S.A. 1919 World Series

1919 : By the 4th game of the 1919 World Series between the champion Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds. Questions were already being asked re "Is The 1919 Series Fixed" which the Cincinnati Reds won. Following 12 months of investigation and confessions from 2 of the players all eight implicated White Sox were banned from Major League Baseball for life and the first Commissioner of Baseball is created to ensure it never happened again. History of Baseball.

1921 U.S.A. Tuberculosis

1921 : A new report from state officials confirms that the number of deaths caused by Tuberculosis continues to rise in State of Michigan.

1933 U.S.A. 18th Amendment

1933 : Seven new states will hold referendums in the next month including Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky for repeal of the 18th Amendment to change from dry states to wet states which will allow alcohol to be sold once again, it is believed the majority will vote in favor of repealing the law. 1942 World War II Taxes

1942 : The chairman of the Finance Committee told the Senate today that the American people would have to pay a total of $36,500,000,000 in taxes to pay for the war effort and demands for a sales tax to finance this are gathering pace.

1954 U.S.A. Marilyn Monroe

1954 : Marilyn Monroe has announced her intention to obtain a divorce from one of the worlds finest baseball players Joe DiMaggio on the grounds of mental cruelty. They have been married less than 9 months.

1957 Space Race

1957 : The Space Race begins when the Soviet Union launches the first artificial satellite SPUTNIK. To put this in to context Sputnik weighed 184 lbs and measured 22 inches in diameter and circled the earth every 1 hr and 36 minutes.

1965 U.S.A. Pope Paul VI

1965 : Pope Paul VI becomes the first Pope to visit the United States when he lands in New York and addressed the United Nations pleading for peace in Vietnam.

1969 China Hydrogen Bomb

October 4th, 1969 : China has announced a hydrogen bomb was recently tested in the Western region of the Chinese mainland and the country had completed its first underground nuclear explosion.

1970 U.S.A. Janis Joplin

1970 : Janis Joplin, is found dead caused by an accidental overdose of heroin.

1970 Kent State University

October 4th, 1970 : A presidential task force that looked into the Ohio National Guard's fatal shooting of four students and wounding of nine others at Kent State University last May 4 have said that the National Guard's 61 shots within a 13-second period was a serious error.
