Los Angeles Times Suspends Pressman Blogger

The Pressman Blogger was suspended this afternoon from the Los Angeles Times, with possible termination following an investigation by a biased jury, for blogging the events of last Thursday and Friday at the Los Angeles Times Olympic Production Facility.

I was told I had been warned in the past regarding my blogging, but I was only warned about broadcasting circulation numbers and nothing else.

So much for first amendment rights.

Stay tuned, as this situation is unfolded.

WOW! What's with those folks over there? Watch your back! They're subject to have Tiny drag you in a dark alley and break your kneecaps and knuckles:-)

I only read the LA Times because of your blog. If not for you, I'd have been knocking them to all my friends years ago. Sounds like I should...

Hang tough, Ed. You haven't done anything to deserve this wrath.

frazgo said...

Hang tough Ed, you've done nothing to warrant this. Free speech is just that...

The whole world knew The Times had problems last week.
The company shouldn't take so long to "man-up" and admit there were production problems.
Many of us subscribers already knew that------when we didn't get our papers.
I love institutions, who will fight to the death for freedom of the press---------except when it comes to themselves.
Thin skinned.......for sure.

jeffjarvis said...

Ridiculous, Ed. The paper should be proud of you as one of the best, most informed, most concerned bloggers about the business anywhere ... and not from the newsroom but from the pressroom.

While I believe the LAT has the right to run its company as it sees fit.

This is NOT a free speech/first amendment issue.

The LAT is just being completely stupid on this issue.

Ed, you're a wonderful face for the behind the scenes stuff at the LA Times and a good egg, and I hope they don't do anything ridiculous or stupid.

Kate Coe said...

If you get axed as a pressman, I hope that the editorial page would man up enough to offer you a job!

To Howard Owens

If this is not a 1st amendment / free speech issue
then what is the issue?

I would encourage EVERYONE who gives a darn about this injustice to let their support of Edward be known by using the Internet to SMASH management's action! This is a pure TRAVESTY to someone who has dedicated a lifetime to the success of publishing giant!

Edward D, I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with the so called management of a ONCE GREAT COMPANY.
I just found your blog last week and have been staying up through the night to read all you've written. Is that odd for a former pressman? Even though I live in Montana I still read the Times and it SICKENS ME to read about what has happened to all the hardworking people that made the Times not only a place to work but also a family.
Now it's profit first and humans a very distant second.
I'm pulling for you Ed,And I hope that somewhere in that soulless company there i a voice of reason.

Ed,

I'd like to suggest you change your moniker from "The Blogging Pressman" to the more appropriate "The self-Flogging Pressman."

Hey, I'm no constitutional lawyer and don't know what is going on. However, even this dumb-ass potato head knows if you keep sh*tting in your own house long enough you're going to get some stink on yourself.

When was the LA Times this "once great" company, especially when it comes to the way they treat their workers? Not sure the Golden Age ever existed.

Will Campbell said...

Ed, I was unfairly "fired for blogging" from a place I gave my heart and soul to for many years. I'm so sorry to hear that you've been so demeaned and your job is being so despicably threatened and I'm sending humungous webs of positive thoughts through the action press in hopes management quits while its so far behind.

bigyaz said...

Freedom of speech? The First Amendment specifically says the GOVERNMENT cannot restrict free speech. It says nothing about your employer.

I don't think this was very smart of the Times, but spare me the First Amendment claims.

Brady Westwater said...

I can not imagine the Los Angeles Times would be clueless enough to fire you. Or at least I would have thought that before last night.

But after I saw the lead article - and lead photo - on the LAT website last night was a full scale review of a novel written by first time novelist Glen Beck, I realized idiots and morons are running the LA Times.

Hey Grandpud,

Why don't you change your Potatoe head for a real head.
Try the 99 cent store.

grandspud said...

Hey Kilroy,

Why don't you learn how to spell
P-O-T-A-T-O.
I don't even need a new $0.99 head to figure that one out.

Holy hash browns lady!

I can recount no great editorial moments in this blog's history that prove it is of major newspaper caliber. Most of the stuff is simply a guy running his dirty underwear up a flagpole. And, I have to admit, that is exactly why I like to read it.

I hope I haven't offended others with my blunt manner. It just frustrates me that everyone else in the world does not have my clarity of thought. I get a little critical at times, but I like to think of myself as the Don Rickles of the vegetable world.

Having used to work for a newspaper, I have a soft spot in my heart for the hardworking guys on the press, and am also thoroughly familiar with production problems. Stuff happens. Why try to hide it? Hang in there, Ed. You've done nothing wrong.

Nubia said...

I see Grandspud is at it, YET AGAIN! Has his right to his opinion, though. But I have no objection to BLOCKING his A _ _! The ultimate PESSIMIST! And if there's something you DON'T need, at this point, Edward, is his kind of JUNK!

Hey, Grandspud...feel free to share more of your 'clarity of thought' that no one ever responds to!

NUBIA, YOU ARE WRONG. I ENJOY SHOWING THE EMPORER HAS NO CLOTHES. LET ALONE A HEAD, OR AN ORIGINAL IDEA. GRANDSPUD'S CLARITY CAN ONLY BE EXPOSED MOST RECENTLY: CITING THE SCE WEBSITE IN RESPONSE TO ED'S COMPLAINT ABOUT THE PRESS ROOM TEMP BEING OF SUCH CLARITY... RESEARCH IS EASY, YET APPEARANTLY IS HALF ASSED ON SPUDS PART.

MUCH LIKE MANAGEMENT, SPUDS FAILS TO UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION ED HAS POSTED SINCE HIS BLOG BEGAN. PEOPLE NEED INFORMATION. THE BLOG HAS BEEN A GUIDEPOST TO SAID INFORMATION—BE IT INDUSTRY, COMPANY, OR LIFE.

YES, ED HAS PUT ON THE RANT A TIME OR TWO; PROBABLY MORE. THE AIRING OF ONE'S UNDERWEAR NOT WITH STANDING, ED HAS ALWAYS HAD WIT.

IT IS WITH GREAT APLOMB THAT I CITE ONE BRIAN FERRELL (EX SFV, BEFORE THE REARRANGING OF DECK CHAIRS ON THE TITANIC ACTUALLY BEGAN), WHEN I SAY, "SPUD, DON'T COME TO A WAR OF WITS UNARMED!"

ED, UNLESS THE FIRE THING WASN'T REPORTED TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES; IF NO ADVERTISERS USE YOUR WORDS AS CITATION FOR CANCELING CONTRACTS; NO TRADE SECRETS RELEASED… BUT WAIT WHAT KIND OF PAPER WERE YOU RUNNING ON THE NIGHT OF 50 BREAKS—NO DAMAGE THERE…

AS FOR DROPPING SUBSCRIPTIONS, WELL GETTING INCOMPLETE PAPERS OUT THE DOOR IN AN UNTIMELY FASHION TAKES THAT CAKE ALL BY ITSELF.

LAST THOUGHT: WHEN ONE “SHITS WHERE HE EATS” YOU MUST ALWAYS INCLUDE THE KING SHITTER WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHERE WE ARE TODAY. NICKEL AND DIMING SAVES NOTHING, BUT IT LEAVES A WHOLE LOTTA’ STENCH ABOUT.

ED I LIKE THE SMELL OF NAPALM IN THE MORNING. I HOPE THIS ATTACK ON 38 YEARS OF SERVICE ENDS BEFORE IT REALLY STARTS. PEACE OUT BLOGGING PRESSMAN.

Now... Nubia responded to my clarity of thought to tell me no one ever responds to my clarity of thoughts, which if true, she would never have responded to my clarity of thought.

Is the world totally tater tots woman??? This is the kind of crap I'm talking about!

The freedom of speech is always the biggest issue in every society. No one is exempted. As the saying says,"the truth hurts." and this means retaliation from the other camp. Ed, we are on your side because we believe that there are some issues should be tackled in a diplomatic way. Wish you the best, Ed. Babet
