Los Angeles Times and the Pac-12

Norman Pearlstine and Chris Argentieri respond to the Oregonian story on LAT and the Pac-12.

Amid crisis, Pac-12 signed agreement to fund news coverage from Los Angeles Times - Oregon Live

Dear Colleagues:

A July 30 article in The Oregonian alleging that there was an “arrangement” between the Pac-12 and the Los Angeles Times did not offer a full and fair account of the facts. No money was exchanged, no ads were placed and the Pac-12 did not pay for any editorial coverage by The Times.

In late 2018, Times ad sales representatives had conversations with officials from the Pac-12 about potential advertising. Those discussions, between Times ad sales and Pac-12 officials, resulted in an insertion order. However, newsroom management became concerned about a perceived conflict of interest and The Times did not move forward with the order.

The Times received no revenue — not a penny — from the Pac-12 or anyone else related to these conversations. It was also made clear to all parties that the Times newsroom would have sole and exclusive control over editorial content.

As to the sports intern, Blake Richardson: She was already writing about the Pac-12, women’s sports and collegiate athletics before any conversations between ad sales and the Pac-12 began. Richardson’s employment was never contingent on any deal. She was offered a reporting job — based solely on her talent and ability — and turned it down for personal reasons.

The Los Angeles Times cherishes its editorial independence. Our reputation for journalistic quality and integrity is — along with the talent of our staff — our most important asset. Our ethics guidelines and other policies govern our work and they were all followed in this matter.

If you have questions about Times journalism ethics guidelines, please contact your supervisor, a member of the masthead or Human Resources.

Cal Poly honors Prince with scholarship, endowment

Cal Poly has established an endowment in honor of printing industry icon Raymond J. Prince, an advocate of education and industry growth who died in May.

The endowment, the Raymond J. Prince Graphic Communication Future Leader Program, will award annual scholarships to graphic communication students who demonstrated academic achievement and the potential to succeed in graphic communication. The endowment will also support program advancement, including laboratory and professional development.

Harvey R. Levenson, Cal Poly professor emeritus and former head of the university’s Graphic Communication Department, aims to reach the first $30,000 as soon as possible to award two $15,000 scholarships paid over four to five years, and then raise an additional $70,000 to help endow future Ray Prince scholarships. Levenson personally pledged the first $15,000 to cover the first scholarship.

Prince, a 61-year printing industry veteran, consultant, and advisor, died on May 1. He was 76. Along with holding a number of industry jobs, he served as a vice president of the National Association for Printing Leadership.

Pirate pitcher Luis Tiant reads about the end of the strike

Members of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) went on strike. The strike lasted only two days, but inaugurated the NFLPA as a real union. The new agreement won the right for players to bargain through their own agents with the clubs, and minimum salaries were increased to $12,500 for rookies and $13,000 for veterans. Also, players’ pensions were improved and dental care was added to the players’ insurance plans. Players also gained the right to select representation on the league’s retirement board and the right to impartial arbitration for injury grievance. – 1970

Delta Print works with imPRESSions on consolidation

California-based Delta Print Group has consolidated its print operations by merging five print companies under one roof. imPRESSions Worldwide helped in the effort with the relocation of two of the company’s presses. imPRESSions undertook the dismantling of a Goss Community SSC and a Heidelberg Harris V-25 pressline and moved both to Delta Print’s new plant in Natomas, California.

imPRESSions had supplied and installed the 5-unit Goss Community press in a Sacramento facility of the company in 2019 to accommodate continued growth. It was anticipated that once the new 130,000-square-foot plant was ready, the press would be relocated to the new facility. Plans were also underway to relocate the 6-unit Heidelberg Harris V-25 press once the SSC press was up and running. The relocation and the installation of both presses were completed in two months.

By August, the plant will be staffed to run 24 hours a day, according to imPRESSions.
