The Record (Stockton ,
California ) will shutter its
production facility in October, President and Publisher Deitra R. Kenoly
announced Sept. 7, the paper reported.
“We will
continue to serve our readers,” Kenoly said. “We will continue home delivery
for our subscribers, newsstand sales and our digital edition at recordnet.com.”
The paper
cited the cost of newsprint and the width of the paper as factors. The Record
is the sole Gannett paper to come at the 50-inch web width, the paper said.
“The costs
of printing the paper with our own press has become too high to continue,” she
said.
The
printing facility opened in 2005, constructed by then-owner Dow Jones, and
relies on some presses that are about 30 years old. Maintaining the older
presses became an issue, the paper said.
The closure
will mean the loss of around 40 jobs. Some employees will be moved to other
jobs at The Record.
