Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to integrate WhatsApp,
Instagram and Facebook Messenger, the New York Times reported. The messaging
services will remain separate apps, but will be linked on the tech side,
according to four people involved in the change, The Times reported.
The three
services have more than 2.6 billion users combined. The changes will allow
people to connect from app-to-app. The changes may raise antitrust and privacy
issues, The Times says.
The
integration may be done by the end of 2019 or early 2020.
In a
statement, Facebook said it wanted to “build the best messaging experiences we
can; and people want messaging to be fast, simple, reliable and private,” The
Times said. “We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted
and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across
networks,” Facebook said.
