 1945 - US Marines Land On Iwo Jima

1945 : United States Marines landed on the tiny island of Iwo Jima where they were met with heavy resistance from the Japanese.
 

1942 - Executive Order 9066
President Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, a controversial World War II policy with lasting consequences for Japanese Americans. The document ordered the "removal of resident enemy aliens" from parts of the West Coast vaguely identified as "military areas."
 

1933 - Great Britain War Loan Repayments
1933 : A major debate is raging on both sides of the Atlantic concerning the money loaned to Great Britain for the War effort . At the end of the War the French Government stated they would only pay 10 cents on the dollar of the money loaned to them and for weapons and the United States Government Agreed to the settlement. Britain in the meantime came to the United States and agreed to pay the full debt including a higher rate of interest than the French.
Now the British Government is demanding the US Government to treat the debts owed exactly the same as the French and other countries in Europe but with the United States having it's own problems with unemployment they are not willing to negotiate . This now leaves 2 great allies in war at odds with each other over war debts and many are waiting to see the outcome on both sides of the ocean. Find More What happened in 1933
 

19 Feb, 1914 - Canada Record Wheat Production
A record amount of wheat had been produced in Western Canada. This crop was yielded during this year at an average rate pf 38 bushels (presumably either per acre of crop planted).

1938 - Forged Checks
On this day, three men were charged of the crime of writing forged checks. One of the men (E.A. Wilcher, 34 years old) had sat a night in jail instead of paying a $1,500 bond.
Authorities had suspected at this time that Wilcher was the leader of a forged check operation that occurred within Sheveport, Hobbes, and areas in between. The two other men that were charged both had two cases of forgery pending against them at this time.
Further investigation was being done regarding this "bad check" sting operation. Authorities were doing whatever they could to put an end to this activity.
 

1938 - Hitler Speech
This was a day of extreme tension and anxiety in Berlin, Germany. On this day, Hitler gave a much-anticipated speech, which was delivered to the third Reich (Nazi Germany Government).
This was the beginning of the start of the expansion of the Nazi regime, which later resulted in the occurrence of World War II (for Americans, 1939-1945). The Third Reich was originally formed some time in 1933.
Adolph Hitler was the Chancellor of this regime, which was very totalitarian and fascist in nature. He strived to fulfill the message that "his" race (The Germans) were superior, and he lead campaigns to eliminated various racial, religious, and political groups such as the following: Jews, Africans, Romanis (a.k.a. Romas, Gypsies), Lutherans, and anti-communists.
 

1950 - Train Crash
A total of 29 people had lost their lives when a crash occurred in Rockville Center, NY. Additionally, 105 people were injured. An investigation had begun regarding this issue-an action taken by federal, state, and county authorities.
For now, it was known that one train had passed through a red light without stopping while heading east on one track. Consequently, it had hit an oncoming Long Island passenger train.
 


19 Feb, 1950 - Dairy Show
It was announced on this day that a dairy exhibit would take place in Ada, Oklahoma tomorrow (February 20, 1950 ). The purpose of this event was to educate and inform people about profitable dairy production.
Furthermore, this presentation was planned in order to walk people through the necessary phases of dairy production. This event was brought to Oklahoma by one of the area’s local college extensions.
 

1954 - Ford T-Bird
1954 : The Ford T-Bird appears as a prototype but did not selling until late in 1954 costing $2,900
 

1959 - Cyprus Independence
Britain, Turkey and Greece sign joint agreement giving Cyprus independence.
 

1968 - UK Thalidomide
Damages for children born with deformities, caused by mothers taking the drug thalidomide during pregnancy are set by the high court. ( The Thalidomide drug was available in the UK from 1958 to late 1961 ) and many cases children born with deformities were confirmed. In 1973 a much larger settlement was agreed following the discovery that more than 400 children were affected .
 

1992 - Merchandising Equipment Group
The Merchandising Equipment Group (MEG) was planning a mass layoff MEG is a commercial equipment supplier to large stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, and others.
The rumors were that this plant was going bankrupt. However, those rumors were not proved at this time. However, this company was suffering financial setbacks at this time in history, but in later years they are reported as earning revenue in the tens of millions of dollars.
 

19 Feb, 2001 - England Foot and Mouth
A Suspected case of foot and mouth disease is detected at an Essex abbatoir, the first case in the UK for 20 years.
The case is later confirmed and four million animals in the UK were slaughtered. The disease cost the farming industry between £800m and £2.4bn and destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. The UK was finaly declared foot-and-mouth free in January 2002
 

2004 Jeffrey Skilling Enron
Former Enron Corp. chief executive Jeffrey Skilling is charged with fraud, insider trading and other crimes in connection with the energy trader's collapse.
He was convicted in 2006 of multiple federal felony charges relating to Enron's financial collapse
 

2007 - Missile Defense Shield
The leaders of the Czech Republic and Poland say that they favor the U.S. building parts of its missile defense shield on their territories. The Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said that he had agreed with his Polish counterpart on the matter. The U.S. wants to build a missile interceptor site in Poland, and a radar station in the Czech Republic. Russia has condemned the plan, and said that it would be able to target the sites if necessary.
 


2008 - Fidel Castro
The ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro has stepped down, forty-nine years after taking power in an armed revolution. This has ended the Cold War fracas that made him an icon to leftists, and a tyrant to his foes. Castro, 81, who has not appeared in public since undergoing stomach surgery, said he would not be seeking a new term as president or leader of Cuba's armed forces when the National Assembly meets again. His retirement has raised expectations for a post-communist system of government, and calls by the United States for democracy.
 

2008 - Parliamentary Elections
2008 : The Pakistan Muslim League-Q party leading figures including the leader of the party, the former speaker of Parliament and six ministers have been ousted in parliamentary elections.
 

2009 - Desmond Tutu advises Obama on apologising to Iraqis
The Nobel prize-winning Archbishop Desmond Tutu has warned Barack Obama that he risks squandering the goodwill that his election has generated. He says that Mr. Obama should apologize for the invasion of Iraq. He has also prayed that Mr. Obama will be tough on African dictators. Tutu added that the U.K's standing in the world has suffered because of its cooperation with the U.S. in the "war on terror."
 

2010 - Tiger Woods makes public apology
Tiger Woods the world number one golfer talks publicly for the first time since the scandal surrounding his private life erupted last year. During his press meeting he said "I was unfaithful, I had affairs and I cheated. What I did was unacceptable,"
 

2011 - Somali Pirates Hijack Yacht
Somali pirates took four Americans hostage after hijacking a yacht traveling from India to Oman. Since 2002, the yacht’s owners Jean and Scott Adam had been sailing around the globe in the boat with two crew members.  
 
 

2012 - Dutch Scientists Grow Meat from Stem Cells
A team at Maastricht University led by Professor Mark Post have successfully grown muscle tissue in the lab from stem cells. The step is the first towards their goal of creating a lab-grown hamburger by the fall.
 

2013 - BMW Recalls Cars
Car manufacturer BMW has announced it will recall 720,000 cars throughout the world, mostly in North America, due to electrical problems. The recall mostly effects cars from their 1-Series, 3-Series and the Z4 made between 2007 and 2011.

 

2014 -Scotland Is Given Bond Issue Power
2014 : United Kingdom ministers announced that Scotland would be granted the power to issue its own investment bonds along with other changes to be made in 2015. The move came only a few months before Scottish citizens are set to vote on a referendum asking whether Scotland should gain independence from the United Kingdom.
