4 Oct, 1927 U.S.A. Mount Rushmore

1927 : Work begins by sculptor Gutzon Borglum on the face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota. It would take another 12 years for the granite images of four of America’s most revered and beloved presidents to finish. The Presidents depicted are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. More about Mount Rushmore

4 Oct, 1919 U.S.A. 1919 World Series

1919 : By the 4th game of the 1919 World Series between the champion Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds. Questions were already being asked re "Is The 1919 Series Fixed" which the Cincinnati Reds won. Following 12 months of investigation and confessions from 2 of the players all eight implicated White Sox were banned from Major League Baseball for life and the first Commissioner of Baseball is created to ensure it never happened again. History of Baseball.

1921 : A new report from state officials confirms that the number of deaths caused by Tuberculosis continues to rise in State of Michigan.

4 Oct, 1933 U.S.A. 18th Amendment

1933 : Seven new states will hold referendums in the next month including Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky for repeal of the 18th Amendment to change from dry states to wet states which will allow alcohol to be sold once again, it is believed the majority will vote in favor of repealing the law. 1942 : The chairman of the Finance Committee told the Senate today that the American people would have to pay a total of $36,500,000,000 in taxes to pay for the war effort and demands for a sales tax to finance this are gathering pace.

4 Oct, 1954 U.S.A. Marilyn Monroe

1954 : Marilyn Monroe has announced her intention to obtain a divorce from one of the worlds finest baseball players Joe DiMaggio on the grounds of mental cruelty. They have been married less than 9 months.

1957 : The Space Race begins when the Soviet Union launches the first artificial satellite SPUTNIK. To put this in to context Sputnik weighed 184 lbs and measured 22 inches in diameter and circled the earth every 1 hr and 36 minutes.

1965 : Pope Paul VI becomes the first Pope to visit the United States when he lands in New York and addressed the United Nations pleading for peace in Vietnam.

October 4th, 1969 : China has announced a hydrogen bomb was recently tested in the Western region of the Chinese mainland and the country had completed its first underground nuclear explosion.

4 Oct, 1970 U.S.A. Janis Joplin

1970 : Janis Joplin, is found dead caused by an accidental overdose of heroin.

4 Oct, 1970 Kent State University

October 4th, 1970 : A presidential task force that looked into the Ohio National Guard's fatal shooting of four students and wounding of nine others at Kent State University last May 4 have said that the National Guard's 61 shots within a 13-second period was a serious error.

1976 : British Rail begins its Inter-City 125 MPH High Speed Train service between London - Bristol - Cardiff.

1977 : Former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, was released after spending 16 hours in police custody for charges of political corruption.

1985 : The latest unemployment figures released show that the unemployment rate is now at 7.1% with unemployment in the black sector now reaching 15.3%, this is part of a continuing trend that worries both government officials.

1992 : An Israeli cargo jet suffering from engine problems crashes into an apartment building close to the airport in Amsterdam, Holland killing approximately 100 people in the apartment building.

4 Oct, 1993 Soviet Union Rebels

October 4th, 1993 : Rebel parliamentarians led by Vice President Aleksandr Rutskoi and Chairman Ruslan Khasbulatov surrender to Russian President Boris Yeltsin after he brings in tanks to surround the Russian White House parliament building.

4 Oct, 1997 Loomis, Fargo and Company Robbery

1997 : An insider job at an office of Loomis, Fargo and Company results in the robbery of $17.3 million in cash.

4 Oct, 2000 Last Mini Rolls Off Production Line

October 4th, 2000 : After more than 40 years of production and over 5 million minis sold the last mini is driven off the production line at the Longbridge plant in Birmingham by 60's Icon Lulu today. The new Mini which is a complete redesign and will be called the New Mini by BMW will go on sale next year. When the Mini first went on sale in 1961 it cost £496 the last few Mini's built this year cost about £8,500.

4 Oct, 2002 John Walker Lindh

2002 : John Walker Lindh is sentenced to 20 years in prison by a federal judge in Alexandria, Va. John Phillip Walker Lindh was captured during the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan while serving in the Taliban army, he was a US citizen and tried in a US court. The charges bought against him included Conspiracy to murder U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals and conspiracy to provide material support and resources to designated foreign terrorist organizations for which he could have received up to three life sentences plus 90 additional years. He was offered a plea bargain "of pleading guilty to supplying services to the Taliban, and carrying weapons during crimes of violence" for which he would receive 20 years which he accepted and is now serving his sentence in FCI, Terre Haute in Terre Haute, Indiana.

4 Oct, 2006 United States Wiccan Symbols

2006 : A group of Wiccans decided to sue the United States government over the right to place their religious symbol on graves in military cemeteries. The religion, Wicca, is recognized by the military but unlike other religions the followers are not allowed to have their symbols on gravestones.

2008 : The latest Labor Department's figures show American companies are shedding shops at the fastest rate in the last 5 years with 159,000 jobs lost in September.

4 Oct, 2011 Pakistan Bus Attack Kills Thirteen

2011 : Thirteen people are killed after gunmen attacked a bus carrying Shia Muslims near Quetta, Pakistan. Another six people were injured in the attacks which targeting Shia Muslims in the area.

4 Oct, 2011 United States NBA Lockout

4 Oct, 2012 Nissan Car Drives and Parks Itself

October 4th, 2012 : Nissan unveiled the NSC-2015 electric car prototype at the Ceatec 2012 show in Tokyo. The car can drive and park itself, it was also able to turn and recognize some road signs.

4 Oct, 2013 Kenya Rioting After Cleric Death

2013 : Rioting began in the Kenyan City of Mombasa after a Muslim cleric, Ibrahim Omar was killed. At least four people were killed with several others injured. Omar had links with al-Shabab and was believed by rioters to have been killed by the authorities.
