19 Oct, 1954 The Comet Jet Aicraft
1954 : Following a number of crashes of the Comet aircraft it's certificate of airworthiness is withdrawn while an inquiry into why the crashes occurred, the inquiry found the problems were most likely due to metal fatigue. The Comet was the first commercial Jet airline that helped to change air travel and during the time the De Havilland Comet was grounded the American aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, took the lead in design and sales when it released its 707 passenger jet, which could carry almost twice as many passengers.

1987 : The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 22 percent dropping to 1739 making it the 2nd largest percentage drop in history in a single day, This was known as "Black Monday" and signaled other markets around the world to drop during October by 20 percent. Many believed that some of the automatic computerized sell programs used by large financial institutions may have contributed to the fall as they are triggered automatically when certain events / figures occur in the markets and after this date more safeguards were put in place to stop a similar thing happening in the future.

1927 : Two tribes of native Aborigines are fighting a full scale war with only war paint, spears and no clothes in the bush only 100 miles from Perth Australia. It is not known why these tribes are fighting as the tribes do not generally use the same areas of bush for hunting due to the large areas available.
19 Oct, 1937 U.S.A. Airplane Crash
1937 : A mountaineer is the only person who has provided an eyewitness account to the worst airplane disaster in US history and has told how he saw the pilot of the United Airlines 21 passenger mainliner flying blind through a mountain blizzard snowstorm skimming pines before crashing into the side of the Uinta Mountains in Utah 80 miles south of Salt Lake City. All passengers and crew from the plane were killed instantly during the crash.

October 19th, 1973 : President Nixon refused to hand over Watergate Related Tapes to special prosecutor Archibold Cox but said he would prepare a summary of their contents. It is believed in many circles that if the special prosecutor refuses the summary President Nixon will fire him.

October 19th, 1982 : John DeLorean is arrested in an airport motel with a briefcase containing $24 million dollars worth of cocaine. He had headed up the DeLorean Motor Company and built one of the coolest looking sports cars with gull wing doors, The company received large subsidies provided by the British government because he set up a factory in Northern Ireland, but the car had a number of technical problems and less than 10,000 were produced which are now highly collectible.
