Hollywood Producer Brings Christmas to Homeboys

Boyle Heights native-turned Hollywood producer, Brian Quintana, returned to his birthplace today to bring Christmas cheer to Homeboy Industries. The Los Angeles based charity was founded by Father Gregory Boyle and is perhaps the nation's most recognized center for gang-impacted and at-risk youth.

Quintana enlisted companies he does business with to compile a Holiday gift bag that has Hollywood's charitable community buzzing. And that is no easy task in any economy. Warner Bros. Entertainment donated the new Batman DVD, Universal Studios provided the Mummy DVD, Disney furnished the Wall-E DVD, the Spectacle Group supplied the new Guns N' Roses CD, Warner Records contributed an assortment of CDs, Joe Francis gave very tasteful Girls Gone Wild caps, Coffee Bean tossed in $5 gift cards, OPI delivered nail polish, Shorty's and Planet Salon shelled out the cosmetics, and M&M/Mars Inc. dished out the sweets. In total Quintana provided over $30,000.00 worth of merchandise to 500 youth from three charities.

Quintana is currently co-producing Superman:Man of Steel for Warner Bros. Pictures. "I am grateful for my success and believe it's my duty to give back," stated Quintana. Quintana once shared a one bedroom home with eleven family members most of whom were gang affiliated. At age fifteen Oprah Winfrey's "A Better Chance" program facilitated him attending The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut before graduating from UC Berkeley. His Hotchkiss scholarship was provided by none other than M&M/Mars Chairman Forrest E. Mars, Jr.. Prior to producing, Quintana served President Bill Clinton, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and countless other politicians.

As a member of the Honorary Committee, Quintana enlisted his Hollywood colleagues to support Homeboy's 20th Anniversary dinner earlier this year. Hollywood supporters of that event included Warner Bros. Entertainment, Dreamworks SKG, Wendy & Barry Meyer, Katie Mc Grath & JJ Abrams, Carol & Frank Biondi, Lynda & Stewart Resnick, Kirk Kerkorian, Anjelica Huston, Herb Alpert, Eva Longoria, Martin Sheen, LAPD Chief William J. Bratton, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

To make a Holiday pledge or for more information Quintana asks that you log onto www.homeboy-industries.org.

JOUR M02 Writing and Reporting for the Media: Creditors Picked in Tribune Filing

From the Chicago Tribune:

Tribune Co.'s official committee of unsecured creditors will include Wall Street banks and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.

JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, Merrill Lynch Capital Corp. and Deutsche Bank National Trust also won seats on the eight-member committee of unsecured creditors, which represents the interest of all holding debt not backed by collateral.

Tribune Co., the Chicago-based owner of the Chicago Tribune, filed for bankruptcy Dec. 8, less than a year after real estate billionaire Sam Zell took it private as an employee-owned company in an $8.3 billion deal that saddled it with debt. Most of the company's $13 billion in debt isn't guaranteed by Tribune Co.'s newspapers and broadcasting stations.

Last year, in the Los Angeles Times, columnist Steve Lopez chronicled his accidental fall into the life of a homeless man who played Beethoven, Saint Saëns, Mozart and Brahms on a battered violin while standing near a tunnel in downtown Los Angeles. Lopez's column became the number one read for me, so engrossing was his account of his friendship with a man the world will get to know, former Julliard student, cellist, and schizophrenic, Nathaniel Anthony Ayers.

California Snow Storm

Many of my colleagues reside in the Antelope Valley and Apple Valley, with the heavy snow fall this morning I’m wondering how many will be snowed in and unable to transverse the freeway system into Los Angeles? Cesar Calderon sent these photographs over at 9 this morning from his home in Palmdale, but he mentioned he was on vacation this week and was not concerned about getting through the snow to the Los Angeles Times. Lets hope the others living in the high desert are as fortunate, or at least have chains on hand.

Save Our Trade: Courtesy Call with a Threat on the Side

By Ronnie Pineda

Keith and I both received a "courtesy call" from Russ yesterday in which he wanted to point out section 3.1 in the contract which is copied in it's entirety below. After reading it again I knew where he was headed based on previous conversations pertaining to our performance and specifically start times since last weeks ratification. In yesterdays conversation he had with Keith and I, he claimed to have evidence that certain individuals are violating the agreement in Article 3.1 No Strike/No Lockout and that he will exercise the language in paragraph (c) and terminate any employee who "he thinks" is participating in activities that violate the language in the opening paragraph (a).

I suggest, no, I INSIST everyone read it very carefully because Russ is making a serious threat. Several operators are currently suspected of such activity and Keith, to both of our surprise is one of them. I cannot accept this accusation against our operators especially Keith simply because we share the same work ethics and do not take our trade or our jobs for granted. At the time of this post the names of the other operators in L.A. was unbeknownst to me and I can only say, no one became an operator or continues to be one if they didn't share those same work ethics.

Russ asked if the Union sanctioned a "Work to Rule" implying that everyone was told to do their job by the book to cause an intentional work slowdown. First of all, Russ should want all of us to do our jobs by the book for obvious reasons such as safety, quality and efficiency. The assumption on his part that the Union or anyone else has called for this type of activity is totally false and sanctioned by no one. There is no way I, or anyone from the International would ask any of our Brothers and Sisters to jeopardize their career by intentionally causing delays to the production of our newspaper in violation of the agreement below. Our priority, I told Russ was to get a quality paper out on the street, on time. To do otherwise would be like shooting ourselves in the foot.

Ed Wilson “Sells Out” as New Tribune Chief Revenue Officer!

Hopes to "Sell Out" Inventory to Help Advertisers Move Products and
Grow Tribune’s Operating Cash Flow

Takes Job At Local Starbucks As First Step

CHICAGO, December 15, 2008 -- Tribune Company today appointed Ed Wilson as chief revenue officer with responsibility for growing the company’s publishing, broadcasting and interactive revenues. He remains president of Tribune Broadcasting, overseeing the company’s 23 television stations, WGN America, and WGN Radio. His appointment is effective immediately.

"In the ten months he’s been here, Ed has rebuilt Tribune Broadcasting and completely changed its culture," said Randy Michaels, Tribune’s chief operating officer. "His eye for talent and his determination have created an environment that rewards innovation and hard work, and delivers results for our advertising customers -- I’m confident he’ll have the same impact across the rest of the company."

Wilson joined Tribune after serving as president of the Fox Television Network from 2004 to 2008. In this position, he was responsible for network sports and entertainment sales, legal standards and practices, and Fox’s 200 affiliated stations.

"We’ve really stepped up our sales efforts this year and we’re seeing solid results, but we’ve got to do even more for our advertisers," said Wilson. "That means developing new products and new, innovative ways of reaching audiences across all our platforms -- internet, broadcasting and print. It means being aggressive and smart."

Known for his ability to work long hours on little sleep, Wilson also will man the night-owl shift at the Starbucks down the street from Tribune Tower. "With this third job, I’ll have access to free coffee," Wilson said, "which means I’ll have the stamina and energy for my two jobs at Tribune -- and I’ll contribute a portion of my Starbucks’ paycheck to the company as a way of kick-starting new-revenue generation."

Prior to working with Fox, Wilson served in executive positions with NBC and CBS. In 2000, he helped found NBC Enterprises and served as its first president. In that capacity he supervised foreign and domestic syndication, merchandising, licensing, music and publishing, as well as domestic and foreign co-productions and co-ventures. Prior to that, Wilson was president and CEO of CBS Enterprises and Entertainment.

In 1994, Wilson founded his own syndication company, MaXaM Entertainment, in partnership with A.H. Belo Corp. The company was sold to CBS in January 1996. His career began in 1980 as a sales trainee for Viacom. Let’s face it, the man’s driven.

Wilson was born and raised in Rison, Ark., and he is a graduate of the University of Arkansas. He is married and has two children.

Meal Periods

Q. Can my employer require that I stay on its premises during my meal period?

A. Yes, your employer can require that you remain on its premises during your meal period, even if you are relieved of all work duties. However if that occurs, you are being denied your time for your own purposes and in effect remain under the employer's control and thus, the meal period must be paid. Minor exceptions to this general rule exist under IWC Order 5-2001 regarding healthcare workers. Pursuant to the Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Orders, if you are required to eat on the premises, a suitable place for that purpose must be designated. "Suitable" means a sheltered place with facilities available for securing hot food and drink or for heating food or drink, and for consuming such food and drink.

Save Our Trade: We Want Our Lunch Breaks!

By Ronnie Pineda

Management continues to violate the law as a result of changes currently taking place in our shops. You would think that a plan was in place prior to ratification to insure these changes were smooth and would not have an adverse effect on our operation. It appears that these decisions are not being made to be in compliance with the contract but, rather as blatant punishment for exercising our rights to form a union. We will not ignore these violations and intend on taking these complaints to the Hour and Wage Commission and file charges seeking damages for the lost meal and rest periods. The dollar amount will continue to rise with each lunch and rest period missed. My initial estimates have the dollar amount owed to our shops is close to $10,000.00 already. Get out the checkbook Sam!

Brother Banuelos again has provided the research to educate ourselves on the laws we are currently basing our complaints upon. Thanks again Vic! The information Vic has for us pertains to lunches and missed lunches. Working through your lunch can only be permitted by "MUTUAL CONSENT" so if you want to go to lunch, you must be allowed to. You can only work through lunch by mutual agreement PERIOD. This information is the same for us as it is for management and there is no grey area.

The source of this information below can be found here:http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/FAQ_MealPeriods.htm
