The Wall Street Journal begins a series alleging insider stock deals at the union-owned Union Labor Life Insurance Co. (ULLICO). After three years a settlement was reached with Robert Georgine, a building trades leader serving as ULLICO president and CEO, requiring him to repay about $2.6 million in profits from the sale of ULLICO stock, forfeit $10 million in compensation and make other payments worth about $4.4 million. All but two of the company’s directors were said to have profited from the deals - 2002

Today in history: March 15, 1810 - Radical African American abolitionist David Ruggles born. Ruggles was an anti-slavery activist who was active in the New York Committee of Vigilance and the Underground Railroad. Unlike some in the abolitionist movement that only relied on moral persuasion, Ruggles argued that fugitive slaves and free Black people beset by kidnappers had a right to defend themselves. He claimed to have led over six hundred people, including friend and fellow abolitionist Frederick Douglass, to freedom in the North. He opened the first African-American bookstore in the United States and published many abolitionist articles and pamphlets, also contributing to abolitionist newspapers such as The Emancipator and The Liberator. His activism earned him many enemies - Ruggles was physically assaulted and his business was destroyed through arson. There were two known attempts to kidnap him and sell him into slavery in the South. Ruggles was especially active against kidnappers - bounty hunters who made a living by capturing escaped slaves.

A Message from Sammy Maloof

Good morning friends. Here's a WINNING Nugget for you today: When the challenges come against you; false accusation, slander and backbiting, remember Isaiah 53:7. It's not your job to defend yourself to the people, it's their job to have discernment. You continue to walk in agape, unconditional love according to 1 Corinthians 13 and you will never fail!
I love you, ~Sammy

CHILI MOST STANDS UP FOR BRANDON PETTIFORD

Hello, my name is Chili Most. I’ve been leading an International Stop The Violence Campaign for 14 months because of the pandemic of senseless killin’ and violence today that’s plaguing our world.

I’ve been on over 300 radio interviews with 200 million listeners talking about two things: “Fight For Your Rights” and “Stop The Violence” both inspired by one of the greatest Americans this country’s ever produced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who stood for non-violence but died for people’s rights.

As I had Ministers preaching the sermon “Stop The Violence” on 2-24-2013 just one week earlier in my hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana there was a hate crime.

On early Sunday morning of 2-17-2013 Mr. Brandon Pettiford was at a party with a friend. Mr. Pettiford has one parent who is black and one is white. The friends he was with that night was a white girl and the party was all white. The young men there got irritated with him dancing with the other white girls and he was beaten badly not only once but twice as the pictures will show.

I would like for every newspaper in this country to put these pictures on the front page of their newspapers as well as the story. You can click on to the links that I’m sending to you in the attachments of this email to verify this information or just Google The Indianapolis Star Brandon Pettiford Hate Crime.

Currently there is no hate crime legislation in the State of Indiana but with the National and International attention that this story deserves it will put the pressure on them to make this happen.

On 4-07-2013 I am currently having Ministers worldwide to preach the sermon “Stop The Violence”/”N’ Love With Love”. There is a frequency of violence and crime in the hearts and minds of people today and we must change that into a frequency of love because God is Love.

As we “Fight For Your Rights” to “Stop The Violence” we will Fight For Brandon Pettiford’s Rights as a human being because no one should be beating like this period. I can be reached at (323) 983-1135 or www.chilimostmusic.com. Thanks. PEACE.

The neighboring citrus packing plant served as headquarters for rescue operations. The tragedy, resulting in the most fatalities on a Texas highway in the 20th century. caused a renewed attention to safety issues surrounding railroad crossings and the transportation of agricultural workers. This clip is from the 1959 film, Why Braceros?, produced to justify the braceros program to the general public. The program was initially prompted by a demand for manual labor during World War II, and began with the U.S. government bringing in a few hundred experienced Mexican agricultural laborers to harvest sugar beets in the Stockton, California area. The program soon spread to cover most of the United States and provided workers for the agriculture labor market. The agricultural program, under various forms, survived until 1964, when the two governments ended it as a response to harsh criticisms and reports of human rights abuses. Agriculture ranks among the most hazardous industries. Farmer workers are at very high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries. A four-month UAW strike at General Motors ends with a new contract. The strikers were trying to make up for the lack of wage hikes during World War II - 1946 ~De

IN THE 12 months following V-J (Victory over Japan) Day in August 1945 almost 5 million workers engaged in strike actions throughout the U.S. Virtually every sector of industry was hit--auto, oil steel, coal meatpacking, railroads, electrical transportation, communication and utilities--although not all simultaneously. The number of workdays lost to strikes exceeded the 1937 level by four times.
Leaders of both the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) had collaborated with employers and the state during the war to put the brakes on the rank and file and beef up wartime production.

After the war, union leaders were hoping to be able to strike a peaceful deal with the employers, getting wage increase and job guarantees in exchange for keeping tight reins on the rank and file.
"It's industrial peace for the post war period," proclaimed the CIO News on April 2, 1945. In the same month leaders of both union federation signed a "Charter of Industrial Peace" with the American Chamber of Commerce.

Four days after V-J Day, President Harry Truman ordered that wartime restrictions on strikes be continued in peacetime. AFL head William Green summed up the bureaucrats predisposition to avoid resistance when he said, "V-J Day will not mean an automatic ending of restraint on strikes."
But the union leaders' plans were upset by both the employers and their own rank and file.

The upsurge began in September when 43,000 oil workers in 20 states walked off the job demanding 40 hours work for 52 hours pay (a 30 percent pay increase).

They were followed by 200,000 coal miners, 44,000 AFL lumber workers, 40,000 Bay Area machinists, 70,000 Midwest truckers and so on.

But these were only preliminary skirmishes. GM workers went out in November for a 30 percent wage increase , completely shutting down the largest corporation in the U.S.

A complete shutdown of the auto industry was prevented only by the policies of the UAW leadership, who decided to conduct a "one-at-a-time" strategy. The GM workers found themselves in the position, despite widespread public support and industry-wide solidarity, of holding the fort alone in a long, 113-day battle of attrition.

Greedy industrialist turned benevolent philanthropist Andrew Carnegie pledges $5.2 million for the construction of 65 branch libraries in New York City—barely 1 percent of his net worth at the time. He established more than 2,500 libraries between 1900 and 1919 following years of treating workers in his steel plants brutally, demanding long hours in horrible conditions and fighting their efforts to unionize. Working Class Heroes  -- www.unionist.com
Lane Kirkland, president of the AFL-CIO from 1979 to 1995, born in Camden, S.C. - 1922 ~De

Kirkland was born in Camden, South Carolina and rose over his career to head the 16-million-member American labor movement.

In 1941, Kirkland entered the United States Merchant Marine Academy, graduated 1942, and became a deck officer on U.S. merchant ships during World War II. After the war, he worked in the Research Department of the AFL. He received a B.S. degree from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Kirkland married Edith Draper Hollyday in June 1944, with whom he had five daughters. A year after their divorce in 1972, he married the Czech-born Irena Neumann (1925–2007).

From 1979 to 1995 Kirkland was president of the American Federation of Labor – Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). During his tenure, union membership in the United States declined precipitously. The unions suffered some of their most serious defeats, including the 1981 air traffic controllers's strike and the 1985 Hormel meat packers' strike.

He also served on the Federal Prison Industries, Incorporated (FPI) board from 1980-1988, representing Labor during FPI's growth years. On the international front, Kirkland's support of the Solidarity movement in Poland contributed to the decline of communism. According to Michael Szporer's Solidarity: Great Workers Strike of 1980, Amercan Unions under the leadership of Lane Kirkland contributed $150,000 beginning shortly after the successful Solidarity Strike, as early as September 1980.

At the time the Carter administration, including its two prominent Polish Americans, Zbigniew Brzezinski and Ed Muskie advised against such aid fearing Soviet reaction. Kirkland boldly took the initiative persuading Zbigniew Brzezinski of the wisdom of supporting the Solidarity movement. In all US union support of Solidarity far exceeded its European counterparts. CIA involved was also relatively small, which was later rationalized by Caspar Weinberger by unions taking the lead and doing a far better job. (He was awarded posthumously with the highest Polish award, the Order of the White Eagle).

His best remembered quotation is:
If hard work were such a wonderful thing, surely the rich would have kept it all to themselves.

On November 13, 1989, Kirkland was presented with the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Bush

In 1994, Kirkland was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton.

In 1999, Lane Kirkland was awarded the Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom. Lane Kirkland died in Washington, D.C., aged 77, from complications of cancer.
