Battle of the Overpass
Men and women weavers in Pawtucket, Rhode Island staged the nation’s first “co-ed” strike. – 1824
The Western Federation of Miners members struck for an eight-hour day, Cripple Creek, Colorado. – 1894
The Actors’ Equity was founded by 112 theater actors meeting in the Pabst Grand Circle Hotel in New York City. A strike six years later, during which membership increased from 3,000 to 14,000, loosened the control on performers’ lives by theater owners and producers. – 1913
The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) Marine Transport Workers struck in Philadelphia. – 1920
One hundred thousand steelworkers and miners in mines owned by steel companies went on strike in seven states. The Memorial Day Massacre, in which ten strikers were killed by police at Republic Steel in Chicago, took place four days later on May 30. – 1937
Henry Ford unleashed his company goons on United Auto Workers organizers at the Battle of the Overpass near the River Rouge plant. General Motors and Chrysler signed collective bargaining agreements with the UAW in 1937, but Ford held out until 1942. – 1937

26 May, 1940 France The Dunkirk Evacuation
1940 : The Dunkirk evacuation begins "Operation Dynamo" was launched for the evacuation of British, French and Belgian soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk in northern France, they were rescued by a flotilla of any and every craft that could make the channel crossing which included fishing boats, pleasure craft and The Royal Navy and the new British Spitfire fighters helped provide air cover. 1989 : Following the communist party stripping power from moderate party chief Zhao Ziyang of power student protesters are leaving Tiananmen Square by the thousands , at one point the number of protesters was estimated at 100,000 in the square but the number is now down to 15,000 , it is now a waiting game by the protesters to see what the new much harder line administration will decide to do to break up the demonstration.

1991 : A Boeing 767 crashes into the jungle near Bangkok, Thailand, killing all 223 people on board.

1994 : Michael Jackson marries Lisa Marie Presley in the Dominican Republic.

2004 : Terry Nichols was found guilty of 161 state murder charges for being an accomplice to Timothy McVeigh who carried out the Oklahoma City bombing.
2006 Germany Largest European Railway Station Opens
2006 : The largest railway station in Europe opened in Berlin, Germany. The Hauptbahnhof, as it was called, cost over 700 million euros to build over a period of eight years. The celebration of the opening was interrupted when a man attacked the crowd with a knife, injuring nineteen people.
2008 Single Child Rule Relaxed For Earthquake Families
2008 : Following the devastating earthquake in the Chengdu area the "Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee" will allow couples whose only child was killed or severely injured during the earthquake to have one more child. The single child rule was bought in during the 1970s when population growth in China caused concerns in the Chinese Government over over population.
2009 Thousands Gather in Protest in Georgia
2009 : Over 50,000 people gathered to protest against the Georgian president, Mikhail Saakashvili. The opposition supporters demanded the president's resignation in a large protest in Tbsilisi, the capital, on the nation's independence day. The gathering was just one of many daily rallies that opposition party had been staging.
2012 Germany Nazi War Criminal Dies
2012 : Klaas Carel Faber, convicted Nazi war criminal, died at the age of ninety in Germany. Faber served on an SS unit and was sentenced to death in 1947 for the death of twenty-two Jewish people. His term was later commuted to life but he had escaped in 1952 and went to Germany where he was able to live as a free man because the country refused to extradite him.
2013 Serbia Funeral for King Peter II
2013 : A funeral for Yugoslavia's last king, Peter II, was held in Belgrade. Peter had become king in 1941 but was forced to flee only eleven days later after Nazis invaded Yugoslavia. He had never returned to the region while alive and had died in the United States.

Remington Rand strike
Pressured by employers, striking shoemakers in Philadelphia were arrested and charged with criminal conspiracy for violating an English common law that barred schemes aimed at forcing wage increases. The strike was broken. – 1805
The U.S. slave trade was abolished. – 1807
Philip Murray was born in Scotland. He went on to emigrate to the U.S., become the founder and first president of the United Steelworkers of America, and head of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) from 1940 until his death in 1952. – 1886
Two company houses occupied by scab coal miners were blown up and destroyed during a strike against the Glendale Gas & Coal Company in Wheeling, West Virginia. – 1925
Thousands of unemployed WWI veterans arrived in Washington, D.C. to demand a bonus they had been promised but never received. They built a shantytown near the U.S. Capital but were burned out by U.S. troops after two months. – 1932
The notorious 11-month Remington Rand strike began. The strike spawned the “Mohawk Valley (NY) formula,” described by investigators as a corporate plan to discredit union leaders, frighten the public with the threat of violence, employ thugs to beat up strikers, and other tactics. The National Labor Relations Board termed the formula “a battle plan for industrial war.” – 1936
The railroad strike was settled with terms imposed by President Harry Truman. – 1946
The AFL-CIO began what was to become an unsuccessful campaign for a 35-hour workweek, with the goal of reducing unemployment. Earlier tries by organized labor for 32- or 35-hour weeks also failed. – 1962

1967 : John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls Royce is delivered, the Rolls Royce caused an uproar including the Rolls Royce Company raising a formal complaint. He had bought the car new from Rolls Royce in 1965 and become bored with the color so had a psychedelic paint job. The car was sold at Sotheby's in 1985 for $2,299.000.00 the most expensive car ever sold.

25 May, 1895 England Oscar Wilde
1895 : Playwright Oscar Wilde was found guilty of gross indecency in London and sentenced two years of hard labor. Playwright Oscar Wilde was arrested on charges of "gross indecency" under Section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act earlier in April ( in 1895 ) this term implied 'homosexual acts not amounting to buggery'.

1935 : Jesse Owens broke three world records at the Big Ten meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan including broad jump, the 220-yard dash and the low hurdles.
1935 U.S.A. Babe Ruth
1935 : Babe Ruth hit the 714th and final home run of his career at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh while playing for the Boston Braves against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Shortly afterwards he announced his retirement.
1943 World War II Dusseldorf Bombing
1943 : 500 RAF Bombers bombed Dusseldorf and laid waste to parts of the city that have been left standing, also the RAF were in action in Burma with a raids into western Burma.

1961 : President Kennedy has asked Congress for $531 million to help the US put a man on the moon before the end of the decade . On July 21st 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon.

1963 : African states unite to create the Organisation of African Unity / OAU to "decolonize" the remaining bastions of white rule in South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, Mozambique and Angola with any and all means possible including providing African "freedom fighters" with finance, arms, volunteers and training bases.
1965 Muhammad Ali VS Sonny Liston Rematch
1965 : Following the Cassius Clay defeat of Sonny Liston on February 25, 1964, for the world heavyweight boxing championship and changing his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali, Liston and Ali meet for a second time in Lewiston, Maine, for the Heavyweight Championship, during the first round Liston goes down ( Often called by a phantom punch ) and the Referee Jersey Joe Walcott stops the fight awarding Ali a first-round knockout.
1967 Portugal Celtic win the European Cup
1967 : Glasgow Celtic becomes the first British team to win the prestigious European Cup, beating favorites Internazionale Milan 2-1 at the Portuguese National Stadium in Lisbon.

1974 : An explosion at a chemical plant at Flixborough leaves more than 25 dead.
1978 U.S.A. First Atlantic City Casino
1978 : The nations first legal casino outside of Nevada opens in the resort town of Atlantic City NJ for dice rollers and card players.
1979 Chicago Airport Plane Crash
1979 : A flight from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois American Airlines Flight 191 crashed and exploded in a field near the airport. The crash killed 273 people, including two on the ground.
1982 Falkland Islands Atlantic Conveyor and HMS Coventry
1982 : Two Argentinean Super Etendards fire French-built Exocets and destroy the Atlantic Conveyor. In A separate attack Argentinean Skyhawks hit HMS Coventry four times with 1,000 bombs causing explosions and the ship to capsize.

1994 : The Camelot consortium pledging to give up to 30% of its takings to to five "good causes". has won the contract to run Britain's first national lottery which starts in November.

1998 : Concerns are being raised by many librarians and academics that the Internet is more likely to provide bad information than good as there are no checks and balances in place, this is well shown if someone is searching the Internet for medical advice as much of the content on the Internet is completely wrong and in some cases could be considered a danger. This was the same year the two founders of Google were developing a new kind of search engine that became the dominant player in Search Engines and they used a different way to measure the contents of a page using a form of voting from links on other sites which would be more likely to give the best results. Since then many SEO's have found ways to fix the voting by buying links or spamming links.
2005 Azerbaijan Longest Oil Pipeline Opens
2005 : The longest oil pipeline in the world opened. The pipeline was one thousand miles long and began in Azerbaijan, travelling through Georgia, and ending at a Mediterranean sea port in Turkey. The pipeline took over ten years to build and cost over three billion dollars. It reaches from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
2006 U.S.A. Enron Corp
2006 : Former Enron Corp. Executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling are convicted in Houston of conspiracy and fraud for the company's downfall. Kenneth Lay dies before sentencing and Skilling was sentenced to 24 years in prison.
2008 Iran Chemical Explosion Kills Many
2008 : A chemical explosion at a factory near Arak, Iran created a fire that killed thirty people and injured almost forty others. The factory that produced cosmetics and detergents was nearly completely destroyed by the blast, but the fire was quickly brought under control.
2009 North Korea Nuclear Test
2009 : North Korea announces that it has conducted a n underground detonation of a nuclear device in the province of North Hamgyong as part of it's nuclear weapons program. North Korea now believes it should be considered a full nuclear power, this raises a number of questions and problems for The United Nations Security Council over concerns that North Korea could sell this technology to other countries or terrorist organizations making nuclear proliferation likely.
2010 China Another iPhone Factory Worker Dies
2010 : Another Foxconn worker was found dead after falling off of a building at the factory. The nineteen year old worker became the tenth person to die in this manner at the factory since the beginning of 2010. The large company produces mobile phones and other electronics for various computer companies, including the Apple iPhone. The company admitted to thwarting numerous similar suicide attempts earlier that year and denied accusations that the employees were under too much pressure and pushed too hard.
2011 Arizona Shooter Ruled Unfit for Trial
2011 : Jared Loughner, the man accused of shooting and killing six people, and injuring US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in a January incident, was found incompetent to stand trial. Loughner pleaded not guilty and was declared unfit for trial after being evaluated by mental competency experts.
2013 First Gay Pride Parade Held in Ukraine
2013 : Ukraine's first gay pride parade took place with about one-hundred attendees in the country's capital city of Kiev. Police were present and had to arrest thirteen people who were trying to break up the gathering.

Brooklyn Bridge under construction
After 14 years of construction and the deaths of 27 workers, the Brooklyn Bridge over New York’s East River opened. Newspapers call it “the eighth wonder of the world”. – 1883
UAW labor leader Victor Reuther was shot and nearly killed at his Detroit home by police. His brother Walter had previously survived an attempted abduction in April 1938, a shotgun attack in 1948 and a bombing in 1949. He ultimately died in a plane crash in 1970, though curiously only one newspaper speculated that it might have been an assassination. – 1949
An 11-day strike began at the state prison in Lucasville, Ohio. – 1973
Earth First! And IWW members Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney were bombed in Oakland, California. Police immediately arrested the victims, destroyed evidence, and went on a witch hunt of local activist groups like Earth First! and Seeds of Peace. – 1990
2,300 members of the United Rubber Workers, on strike for ten months against five Bridgestone-Firestone plants, agreed to return to work without a contract. They had been fighting demands for 12-hour shifts and wage increases tied to productivity gains. – 1995
