Time Clocks at the Los Angeles Times

Date: August 17, 2010
From: Chris Avetisian, CFO
Gwen Murakami, SVP Administration
Subject: KRONOS – new time and attendance system
To: All LATMG employees

Here’s the first of several communication steps we will be taking to explain those black boxes that have been installed in our buildings. Tribune has initiated several technology projects to improve the efficiencies of many business processes and the new web-based KRONOS time and attendance system is one of them. KRONOS will replace our current time entry system that provides data for our paychecks every two weeks. The black boxes are time clocks which will be one way that employees will be able to report their time; online reporting is another way.

Because accurate paychecks are important to everyone, we want to be sure that we transition to KRONOS in the best way possible. Next month, we’ll provide training to managers/supervisors as well as to employees in each department, so you’ll be very familiar with the new process when we “go live”. We know that you have a lot of questions and we’ll be sure to address all of them in the upcoming training sessions.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.

There was a 1957 sci-fi movie titled "Kronos" about a big energy-sucking robot that came to Earth from "out there" somewhere to steal our electrical and atomic energy resources so it could take it back home. I imagine that this KRONOS timekeeping system is as welcome at the LAT as the giant robot supposedly was when it went on its B-movie rampage.

Is this legal? I don't know a lot about jobs in the newspaper business, but it would seem to me that at least some of the people would be salaried exempt (FLSA laws). If they are, then their paychecks cannot be determined by a time clock. Maybe their HR/Compensation Departments should review the process.

To quote Bugs Bunny, "what ultramaroons."

You can look at this as big brother keeping up with you or you can be grateful you have a great paying job, or both. You're there anyway so who cares how they keep up with your time. I wouldn't sweat this too much. All hourly employees have to punch in/out so Ronnie can't cry they are trying to bust the union, and as long as they don't cut the monthly dues he doesn't care. He doesn't have to punch a clock.
