On March 5, 1945, Lena Baker became the first & only woman to be executed in the electric chair in the state of Georgia. Lena was tried & convicted of murdering a white man who had been holding her hostage and forcing her to bed him, threatening her life and the life of her children should she leave him and try to go home, when she did find the strength and courage to stand up to him and leave his house, he would go and get her and force her to go back to his house, finally after three years Lena said enough was enough, she was going home to be with her kids, the white man put a gun to her throat and threatened her life again, they struggledand the gun went off, the white man was dead, Lena was arrested, her trial, conviction, and sentencing lasted only four hours. Lena's execution lasted all of the six minutes and required multiple shocks to kill her. Sixty years after her execution Lena Baker was officially pardoned by the state of Georgia...
This is a horrible and shocking story, but imagine how many others have
lost their lives to this same injustice, racism, discrimination, hate,
and bigotry. Think about all the black people railroaded into prison
today, some sitting on death row for crimes they didn't commit, others
who have been executed by the same evil system that have created new
ways to execute our people in what they consider a more humane way, but
no murder of innocence is humane... We as a people must come to the realization that this system was set up to fail us from the very beginning, we have been suffering far to long, and we will continue to suffer at the hands of injustice until we stand up together and fight the very system that's trying to bury us alive, let us come together in solidarity and hope, working toward creating new laws that treat everyone equally, "UMOJA!"

About this blog and The Pressmens Club
The blog was started to talk about issues impacting the pressroom both positively and negatively. The views expressed here are not of the LA Times, but of each individual's opinion. The Pressmen's Club is composed of men and women who have printed the paper for twenty years or more. Semi-annual dinners are held in March and October. See Ed Padgett for more information.
