• Started career with the Tribune Co. at the Chicago Tribune, working in the pressroom as a crew supervisor, training supervisor and shift supervisor
• Pressroom manager, production manager at the Daily Press in Newport News, Va.

• Vice President of Operations at Landoll’s Inc. a children’s publishing company
• Joined The Times in 2000 as President of California Community News

The Los Angeles Times’ parent company has completed its acquisition of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

This is exciting news for all of us as we bring together two outstanding institutions with a singular commitment to excellence in journalism.

As we move forward, we will reestablish the name of this historic publication, The San Diego Union-Tribune, which has long been synonymous with quality journalism and public service.

The team at The San Diego Union-Tribune will be led on a day-to-day basis by Russ Newton, the new President and Chief Operating Officer. He will report to me in my role as Publisher and Chief Executive Officer.

Russ will work closely with Editor Jeff Light, Managing Editor Lora Cicalo, and Bill Osborne, Editorial and Opinion Director.

What won’t change is The San Diego Union-Tribune’s place as an independent voice of the San Diego community, devoted to informing, engaging and serving its readers.

L.A. Times Juggled the Books and Fired Him, Auditor Says

 LOS ANGELES (CN) - Los Angeles Times fired an auditor for blowing the whistle on a scheme to pad circulation numbers, the man and his company claim in court. The higher a newspaper's circulation, the more it can charge advertisers.

 At some point, Daley says he became aware of "past fraudulent behavior at the Times, whereby the Times entered into agreements to 'buy its own newspapers' and count the purchases as part of its circulation," the complaint states.

  "This fraud was designed to deceive the Times' advertisers and was very similar to a situation involving newspapers Newsday and Hoy, which led to federal arrests and convictions of Tribune employees. In fact, while the U.S. Attorney in New York was prosecuting employees of Tribune regarding Newsday and Hoy, the Times was engaging in essentially the same illegal activities in Los Angeles. As with the Newsday and Hoy case, the fraud perpetrated here was performed by high-level executives."

Russ Newton named publisher at Times Community News

New head of Times Community News says he sees value in print journalism.

Readers may soon see papers in coin-operated newspaper boxes again, said Times Community News Publisher Russ Newton, a move he said will increase the availability of the Glendale News-Press and Burbank Leader to interested readers as well as highlight its worth.

“We are going to charge something for the newspaper,” said Newton, who added that it’s not about raising money, but because “there’s value to the product.”

Earlier this month, Austin Beutner, publisher and chief executive of the Los Angeles Times, named Newton publisher of Times Community News, a portfolio of local papers that includes the News-Press, the Burbank Leader and the La Cañada Valley Sun. He will also oversee three community titles based in Orange County: The Daily Pilot, Coastline Pilot and Huntington Beach Independent.

I was informed at yesterday's General Membership meeting that Senior Vice President, Russ Newton has been walking the shop floor seeking your forgiveness and asking that he be given another chance. Another chance for what? Another chance to do more damage to our family's all the while improving his household wealth? Why would he ask for another chance if he didn't do anything wrong? EVERYTHING HE HAS DONE IS WRONG! That goes along with his request that you also TRUST him. WHAT? Does he think you forgot all that he has said (LIES) and done to our shop since taking control? For some reason this Peanuts cartoon kept popping up in my head and I think it contains the required response. 


Do you remember all he has done to our brothers and sisters that have been on disability only to receive no compassion and lose their job when deemed healthy by their doctor to return, Martin Conboy, Don Reese (RIP) etc.... That is just one of the many heartless acts he is guilty of that proves he does not deserve any chances whatsoever. The Grinch grew a heart, but he is a cartoon character, Russ is incapable of change and he and his minions seek only to improve their situation at the expense of you, the workers. Stand your ground and fight for your rights! The Union is your only protection from this tyrant, and he will lie to achieve his objective. What is his objective? To get rid of your Union! This is just in preparation of a de-cert election he and his former supervisor crony are conditioning the membership for. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING WITHOUT TALKING TO THE UNION FIRST! YOUR UNION RIGHTS ARE GOING TO BE UNDER ATTACK TOWARDS THE END OF OUR CURRENT CONTRACT!

Prove you are worthy of Forgiveness and Trust Russ! Restore Seniority, Cease your Anti-Union Animus, resolve our grievances and I will personally forgive you!
