Forty-two years ago I was introduced to the El Tepeyac Restaurant, and have been a regular customer ever since. Manuel Rojas loved running his restaurant, and showed his appreciation with free shots of tequila and whiskey. He also had a well stocked behind the counter arsenal of different beers, which he also freely gave away to his customers. Always quick with a big smile Manuel made a point of walking to each table greeting his guests, with his gravel voice, would offer the diners a shot. I would always bring a copy of the Los Angeles Times to him, he discarded the main sections for his favorite, the LA Times Sports section.
Last year I heard rumors of Manuel's passing, yet could find nothing on the Internet to confirm this false information. As we walked to the entrance of the dining area last April here comes Manuel himself. Wish I could have captured my smile from ear to ear as I was so pleased to see him. I mentioned the rumors I had heard and he stated "I almost died and was in bed for a few months".
I captured the photograph above last April to show that Manuel was indeed alive and well for anyone that heard the rumor that he passed away last year.
After paying your bill you were always offered a handful of candy, such as bubble gum, tootsie rolls, and different flavored suckers.
The last nine months I saw very little of Manuel in the restaurant and his practice of giving away alcohol had stopped.
With all the ado this afternoon and the President's State of the Union speech tonight this sad news had not made the Internet yet.
Rest in Peace Manuel Rojas, everyone will miss you.

cancer Mr. Rojas had was to advanced and they couldnt do anything for
