On Monday, the Audit Bureau of Circulations will issue its semiannual FAS-FAX report that gives the circulation of daily newspapers. For the past several years, the reports have been bad news for most major metros including the San Jose Mercury News. But Editor & Publisher says it has been told by industry sources that the Merc will be among a handful of major metros to either report gains or slight decreases (less than 1 percent). Other papers that will have similar good news are the Merc's former sister papers in Philadelphia, The Inquirer and Daily News, which appear to be thriving under local ownership.
