Most of San Francisco magazine’s employees quit

The majority of San Francisco magazine’s editorial employees gave notice or quit their jobs the week of Oct. 8, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Modern Luxury of Atlanta owns the monthly magazine and also publishes more than 30 other city publications. 

“Since I left, there have been whispers and then rampant discussion of them laying off most of the staff anyway,” said Jon Steinberg, editor in chief until mid-July. Employees “see the writing on the wall and are quitting.”

Ex-employees think only two full-time editors will stay, including Jason Sheeler, who came on recently as editor in chief, according to the Chronicle. 

There are part-time editorial staffers, but some are independent contractors, according to the paper. The changes did not hit the magazine’s advertising staff. 

Publisher Paul Reulbach did not return phone calls and Modern Luxury Editorial Director Stephanie Davis Smith did not return an email seeking comment as of the Chronicle’s story.
