 15 Sept, 1963 - Four Young Black Girls Murdered By Klan

1963 : Members of the Ku Klux Klan plant 19 sticks of dynamite with a delayed-time release outside the basement of the 16th St. Baptist Church which was a rallying point for civil-rights activities through the spring of 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama. Four young black girls (Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, Addie Collins, and Cynthia Wesley) were killed in the bombing as they prepared their Sunday school lesson on "The love that forgives." The bombers identities were Bobby Frank Cherry, Thomas Blanton, Herman Cash, and Robert "Dynamite Bob" Chambliss. The bombing, which was targeted at children attending church, provided the impetus for increased support for people working for civil rights. Due to public outrage it marked a turning point in the U.S. civil-rights movement of the mid-20th century and contributed to support for passage of civil rights legislation in 1964.

1926 : As heavy rains continue to fall across the Midwest many towns and cities are only accessible by boat and with rain continuing to fall more and more rivers are overflowing making the situation worse each day, forecasters are predicting further rain for the next 7 days.

15 Sept, 1931 - UK Mahatma Gandhi
1931 : A conference between the British government and the emissary for India Mahatma Gandhi continue in London with the figure of Gandhi sat cross legged on a chair with his loincloth admitting that Britain has the power of force to control India but would like the two countries to work together as an honorable and equal partnership in India, during his speech to the conference he said he was a poor humble agent acting on behalf of the Indian National Congress.

15 Sept, 1935 - German Jews Stripped of Citizenship
1935 : German Jews are stripped of their citizenship, reducing them to subjects of the state, this was only part of Hitler changes to Jews as they were disqualified from public office and professions, and also not allowed to marry Aryans. Finally throughout the German State signs appeared in shops and Hotels with the words "Jews Not Welcome."
 

15 Sept, 1940 - Battle of Britain
1940 : The Battle of Britain turns in British favor when the Royal Air Force (RAF) flying the new Spitfires down 56 German aircraft in two dogfights lasting less than an hour.

1951 : Communist China has taken control of the capitol of "The Roof of The World" Tibet, and communist trained priests have been sent to take charge of the Dalai Lama's Realm.

15 Sept, 1961 - Congo UN Troops Surrounded
September 15th, 1961 : UN troops including a number of Irish troops have been surrounded by the province of Katanga well armed troops and hundreds of fanatical tribesman, the UN is rushing in reinforcements in an effort to stop a bloodbath by the local tribesman.
 

15 Sept, 1963 - Riots Erupt in Alabama
1963 : Riots erupt in Alabama after four young African-American girls are killed during Sunday School as the result of an exploding bomb. The riots result in the death of two more youths.
 

15 Sept, 1964 - UK The Sun Newspaper
September 15th, 1964 : The Mirror Group is replacing it's morning newspaper the Daily Herald with The Sun promising the paper will be a "radical" and "independent" newspaper (it was still published in the traditional broad sheet format). In 1969, Mr Murdoch bought the newspaper from the Mirror Group and transformed it into a tabloid newspaper and shortly afterwards launched the "Page Three Girls" page. In 1978, The Sun overtook its closest rival The Mirror and became the top selling newspaper in the UK.

1978 : A source close to the Camp David peace talks has told reporters that Israel is agreeing in principle to eventual withdrawal from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip which they have occupied since 1967, but the 2 key stumbling blocks are the future of the Palestinians and the Israeli Settlements in occupied Arab lands.

15 Sept, 1981 - Egypt Expels the Soviet Ambassador
September 15th, 1981 : Egypt has expelled the Soviet Ambassador to Cairo and six of his staff as they believe they are making an already difficult situation worse by fanning the flames of Sectarian strife in the country.
 

15 Sept, 1991 - Japan Typhoon Kinna
1991 : Typhoon Kinna has reached western Japan with winds in excess of 80 mph accompanied by torrential rain causing rivers to flood and bridges to collapse due to mudslides.
 



15 Sept, 1999 - U.S.A. Hurricane Floyd
September 15th, 1999 : Hurricane Floyd a Category 4 storm with winds in excess of 140 mph hits the Cape Fear region of North Carolina causing the drowning deaths of 56 people and 6,000 homes were lost to the storm, from there it continued up the coast to Connecticut.

2001 : As President Bush tells the people of America to prepare for war, the countries of Iran and Pakistan bolster borders with Afghanistan as many believe this will be the first target as it is believed that is where Osama Bin Laden is hiding out, meanwhile panic buying by the citizens of Afghanistan of the basic essentials to live and many are leaving the Capital of Kabul for safer areas in villages outside of the city.

September 15th, 2005 : President George W. Bush admits to the nation the government had failed to respond adequately to the devastation caused to New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina and urged Congress to approve a massive reconstruction program.

15 Sept, 2006 - Taiwan Protest March
2006 : Over 320,000 marched in Taiwan calling for the resignation of the president, Chen Shui-bian. The march came amidst protests held in the capital, Taipei for weeks. The protesters called for his resignation after a series of scandals involving people close to President Chen.
 

15 Sept, 2011 - Ethiopian Athletes Disappear
September 15th, 2011 : Fifteen Ethiopian athletes went missing after competing in the All Africa Games in Mozambique. There were no indications as to where they had gone, however it was most likely that they traveled to South Africa to pursue greater economic opportunities.

2011 : Metropolitan Police arrest UBS trader Kweku Adoboli after the Swiss bank says it lost $2bn (£1.3bn) as a result of unauthorized trading by a member of staff.

September 15th, 2012 : People across China have staged angry protests against Japan over disputed islands in the East China Sea. The protests have only escalated tensions between the two countries.
 

15 Sept, 2013 - First Openly Gay Mayor in Mexico
2013 : The first openly gay mayor, Benjamin Medrano, in Mexico's history takes office in the city of Fresnillo. The city is in the conservative state of Zacatecas and has been dealing with feuding drug cartels. Medrano stated that he wanted to help the people in his city.
