21 Sept, 1948 Earthquake Iran 16,000 dead

1948 : The death toll in the area hit by an earthquake which hit Tabas and the surrounding villages on Saturday has now reached 16,000 and Iranian aircraft are spraying areas effected with disinfectant in a hope to keep diseases from spreading. The smell of death still pervades through the smell of disinfectant as there are still large numbers of dead who have not been buried. Iran has asked the world for help and medical supplies and staff as many wounded men and women are still untreated due to the small hospital in the area.

21 Sept, 1998 Clinton Grand Jury Testimony Shown On TV

1998 : Bill Clinton's testimony about his possible affair with Monica Lewinsky as shown on public television for the first time. The president was forced to defend previous statements about the exact nature of his affair and whether he had previously lied under oath.

21 Sept, 1921 Germany Chemical Plant Explosion

1921 : An explosion at a chemical products plant in Oppau, Germany, killed an estimated 800 people.

21 Sept, 1922 Canada Harvest Returns To Pre-War Levels

1922 : Following a number of poor harvests in Canada and the interruption of the war, Canada will have it's best harvest for over a decade and it is hoped that in the next couple years harvests will return to pre-war levels.

21 Sept, 1931 US Banking System Problems

1931 : As well as being the low point in the 1930s depression years also was a testing time for the US banking system as Americans lost faith in the banking system meaning they decided to draw money out of their local banks which in turn caused over 800 banks to close by the end of the year.

21 Sept, 1931 Great Britain Abandons Gold Standard

1931 : Great Britain decides to abandon the Gold Standard causing a minor panic in the American banking System.

21 Sept, 1938 U.S.A. Hurricane

1938 : A hurricane with winds reaching 185 miles per hour often known as the 1938 New England hurricane landed on seven new England States causing the deaths of nearly 700 and property damage estimated in the hundreds of millions. 21 Sept, 1938 Europe Accepts Germany Invasion of Poland

1938 : In Europe politicians from France and England are accepting the price of peace is to allow Germany to take control of Czechoslovakia, of course the Czechs do not agree and many other countries and people around the world are questioning the wisdom of Great Britain and France backing down to Hitler believing he will make political capitol and make him think he can continue with his policies without British or French interference , only time will tell if they made the right decision.

21 Sept, 1939 U.S.A. Neutrality Acts

1939 : Following the outbreak of war in Europe FDR goes before Congress and asks that the Neutrality Acts, a series of laws passed earlier in the decade, be amended to lift an embargo against sending military aid to countries in Europe facing the onslaught of Nazi aggression during World War II.

21 Sept, 1947 French Grand Prix

1947 : The French Grand Prix returns after the war years and Louis Chrion wins with his Talbot Lago in Lyon.

1949 : The Communist People’s Republic of China is proclaimed under Mao Tse Tung.

21 Sept, 1958 Iceland Cod War

1958 : Britain and Iceland have called a temporary halt to the COD WAR because a British Marine was taken sick with acute appendicitis, and the British skipper of the Frigate Diana asked the Icelandic coast guard ship Aeger for permission to sail into the Icelandic port where a hospital was located inside the Icelandic 12 mile zone. The Icelandic Government gave permission and the Marine is now in hospital in Iceland receiving treatment.

21 Sept, 1969 UK Squatters Evicted

September 21st, 1969 : 200 squatters members of the so called "London Street Commune" who have occupied 144 Piccadilly for the last 6 days are evicted when police storm the 100-room building.

1972 : Following a series of bombing and terrorist strikes against the government President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared martial law in the Philippines.

21 Sept, 1979 Harrier Jump Jet Crash

1979 : An RAF Harrier Jump Jet has crashed onto houses in a Cambridgeshire town, killing two men and a young boy. The Jet was involved in a midair collision when the two Harrier jump jets collided at about 8,000 ft.

21 Sept, 1989 Nigeria Terrorist Bombing Aircraft

September 21st, 1989 : A terrorist bomb is thought to be the cause of a French DC 10 jetliners crash in Southern Nigeria that killed all 171 people on board. The Muslim extremist group Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility.

1989 : Colin Powell the first African American is appointed as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

September 21st, 1989 : Hurricane Hugo lands in South Carolina with winds of 135 mph killing at least three and causing significant damage to property in the area.

21 Sept, 1998 Greece Possible War With Turkey

1998 : Due to the growing tensions with it's neighbors Turkey, Greece is to conscript women between the ages of 18 and 30 into military units to protect it's border area with Turkey.

21 Sept, 1999 Taiwan Earthquake

September 21st, 1999 : A 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Taiwan kills thousands of people, causing billions of dollars in damages and leaves an estimated 100,000 homeless. The worst area was Tungshih, where virtually every building was damaged and the population of 60,000 was left without electricity, water or telephone service.

21 Sept, 2004 Haiti Tropical Storm Jeanne

2004 : Tropical Storm Jeanne has caused severe flooding on the Island of Haiti leaving tens of thousands homeless and over 500 deaths. The 30% city of Port-de-Paix is now covered by water with just a few house tops visible and along the coast and nearby plantations are reported to be under water. And in the city of Gonaives where roads around the city were transformed into fast flowing rivers and 80% of the population is affected.

21 Sept, 2007 Australia Wheat Crop Fails

September 21st, 2007 : The Australian wheat crop has failed due to severe drought and combined with the problems of an outbreak of new crop diseases in Europe and the Americas, wheat prices have hit a new 10 year high with Australian wheat now fetching US$340 (£169) a ton. As the high prices enter the consumer food markets and in areas of world living in extreme poverty bread which is a staple food for the poor is becoming too expensive for many causing a series of protests.

21 Sept, 2008 Lesotho Massive Diamond Found

2008 : The twentieth largest rough diamond was discovered in a Lesotho mine. The diamond weighs 478 carats and could produce a 150 carat cut stone.

21 Sept, 2011 Iran Frees US Hikers

2011 : Two American hikers were released from jail in Iran after spending two years in detention after being convicted of spying. Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were released on bail and immediately flown to Oman. The two men and Sarah Shroud who had been released in 2010 were arrested by authorities along the Iraq-Iran border while hiking through the region during a vacation.

2011 : Google+, social network service is released to the general public. Up to this point it had been by invite only, Google+ was released on June 28th via invite only and over the next 3 months additional features are added and bugs were fixed.

21 Sept, 2011 Rock Band R.E.M. Announce Breakup

September 21st, 2011 : Popular US rock band R.E.M. announced the band would be splitting up after 31 years. The band had gained popularity in the early 1990s and went on to become popular international musicians. They apologized to fans stating that they were ready to end their band.

21 Sept, 2011 Troy Davis Executed in Georgia

2011 : Death row inmate Troy Davis was executed in the US state of Georgia after the US Supreme Court denied an appeal for clemency. Davis and his attorneys maintained his innocence until the last minute despite being convicted for the murder of Mark MacPhail, a police man, in 1989. His case had been disputed due to the fact that many of the witnesses recanted or changed their testimony after his trial.

21 Sept, 2012 Ethiopia New Prime Minister Sworn In

2012 : New Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn is sworn in after the death of Meles Zenawi in August after twenty-one years in power. Desalegn had been the foreign minister and deputy prime minister.

21 Sept, 2013 Iraq Suicide Bombing at Funeral

2013 : Over sixty people are killed and another 120 people are injured after suicide bombers attack a funeral in Baghdad. Two explosions hit mourners who had been in a tent and then a third explosion was set off as the police and ambulances gathered to help. The explosions started fires in the surrounding areas. No particular group claimed responsibility for the attacks.
