A crowd estimated to be 100,000 strong rallied at the Wisconsin state Capitol in protest of what was ultimately was to become a successful push by the state’s Republican majority to cripple public employee bargaining rights - 20112013.02.25history-plain-cloth

(Cut From Plain Cloth: The 2011 Wisconsin Workers Protest:  The 2011 worker uprising in Wisconsin made history: hundreds of thousands of enraged workers and supporters converged on the state capital of Madison to protest the gutting of public employee collective bargaining. This moving and beautifully-executed new book marks the event for the piece of history it is, documenting the stories of demonstrators ranging from dedicated and overworked teachers to an unsettled Vietnam vet who finally felt welcomed back to his country, from high school students supporting those teachers to a 79-year-old German immigrant with a history of speaking truth to power.)

Summing up these serious safety issues, Hansen has this to say: "The situation is life-threatening, and management is not listening to the workers' concerns. What upsets our folks is that TriMet has plenty of money to hire excess numbers of highly-paid managers, but no money to keep up with basic maintenance of the system. Management is willing to bleed the operations budget dry in order to expand a light rail system that its workers know is falling apart." ~De

The past few years I have become a fan of tribute bands, and I'll have to admit it's been a thrilling ride as we revisit the music of my youth. I meet Vince Lupo at Marquee 15 when he introduced himself to me, having never heard his band, which was called Rolling the Stones at the time, I was extremely pleased with the show this group put on. After the guitarist quit the band, the name of the group had to be changed and a new member found. Everything fell into place as the new group mamber fit right in, and the band was renamed The Ultimate Stones.

With lead singer Mick Adams and Vince Lupo keeping the beat the band has experienced much success around the country. Join me at the Roxy as we step back in time and enjoy some excellent music at a cost we can all afford, FREE!

Of Politics, Consensus and Quarterbacks

by J. Evert Jones and Olivia Rubio
February 22, 2013

The following was submitted to the Los Angeles Times in response to James Rainey’s February 22 article: Garcetti Role in Budget Fixes is Disputed.

The true essence of politics is conciliation.  The multiple parties, the multiple voices in our political system reflects this essence, as our nation was founded on dissent. The struggle to navigate the best course for our nation, our state and our community lies in the acceptance that diverse opinions exist that are equally valid, equally compelling, equally deserving of consideration.

Eric Garcetti should be praised for his willingness to seek consensus, especially in the face of heated dissent.  A public official should never shrink from the public whom s/he represents, but keep them engaged in dialogue—this is part and parcel of our political process.  Labeling Mr. Garcetti as a “conciliator” as though it were a pejorative is a great disservice to the people of Los Angeles.

Trumpeting “fiscal hard-liners” as Mr. Rainey suggests in his article, is nothing more than embracing the trivial platitudes of Monday morning quarterbacks.  It’s easy to call the play the day after or shout criticism from the sidelines, but another thing entirely to be on the field in the thick of the game.  As Mr. Rainey notes in his article, Mr. Garcetti is unafraid to face and defend his decisions for our city, despite even vehement disagreement.

A quote attributed to the French philosopher Voltaire sums up his philosophy: “I may disagree with what you’re saying, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”  A conciliator understands this, and Los Angeles needs a conciliator right now; someone with a keen eye for the future, yet grounded by the realities set for today.  This is the true essence of politics, and of an effective leader.

A Message from Sammy Maloof

Good morning.
I declare and I will speak only positive words of faith and victory over myself, my family, and my future. I will not use my words to describe the situation. I will use my words to change my situation. I will call in favor, good ideas, healing, and restoration. I will not talk to God about how big the problems are. I will talk to the problems about how big my God is.
This is my declaration. Remember your words is the only thing God can work with.  I love u Sammy.

Los Angeles Times Moving More Content Online

From: James, Mike
Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 12:20 PM
Subject: space Hey Everyone,

A heads-up about some space reductions coming our way. Beginning next week, as part of an overall reduction in the paper’s news hole, the Sports section is going to be reduced by an average of roughly seven columns a day, or eight pages a week. You’ll all obviously see some changes in the section; a couple of those changes have already gone into effect. We are trying to deal with this reduction in large part by trimming our agate report and not dramatically limiting the original content you all provide so professionally every day.

You may have noticed that today’s NBA box scores are in a reduced format from what we have been using. We made this change ahead of next week because it seemed logical, with the league coming out of the All-Star break. We have eliminated the latest line for baseball, hockey and college basketball as well. There will be other significant agate cuts.

We will continue, however, to use full box scores for our local teams.

I suspect that many of you associated with beats will get emails from readers complaining about lack of scores or truncated box scores. Please forward those to me; I’m compiling information about the reaction to the cuts.

This space reduction will force us to write more tightly as well, and everyone can expect that word counts will be reduced as we work through this.

Thanks, Mike….

Tennessee adopts a new constitution abolishing slavery. 1865 ~De

On Jan. 13, 1865, Military Governor Andrew Johnson of Tennessee (who became Lincoln’s vice president on March 4) sent a message to President Lincoln announcing that a state convention of more than 500 delegates had adopted an amendment to the state constitution forever abolishing slavery in Tennessee. Johnson remarked in his message: “Thank God that the tyrant’s rod has been broken.”

The 500 delegates passed the following two amendments “without a single dissenting voice”:
Sec. 1. That Slavery, and involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, are hereby forever abolished and prohibited throughout the State.

Sec. 2. The Legislature shall make no law recognizing the right of property in man.
The amendments became law on Feb. 22 when approved by a vote of the state’s citizens.
The convention had actually been called to plan a constitutional convention for later in the year, but the delegates became so enthused for a constitutional amendment banning slavery that they decided to take action immediately, and the amendment passed unanimously.
