Jack Klunder Memo on New E-Edition

Fellow Employees:

Today we are releasing a new electronic edition of the Los Angeles Times for the benefit of our employees. This version, commonly known as an e-edition, is an exact electronic replica of the printed edition. You’ll now be able to access it each morning through the Timeslink intranet.

The e-edition will allow you to view the Los Angeles Times as it was edited, printed and delivered to our readers. You’ll also have the ability to access archives of the paper, search keywords to find articles or advertisements and save or print stories that may be of relevance to you. Office copies of the printed edition will still be available for your use in their normal locations.

The e-edition is a tool many newspapers are using to provide copies of the paper to readers who cannot or choose not to read the paper in its printed format. Eventually, The Times will make the e-edition available to our readers as a way to enhance or supplement their existing newspaper subscription. Because this electronic edition is counted as ABC paid circulation it is a valuable tool in our hunt to align our print and online strategies with those of our readers.

The e-edition isn’t meant to compete with latimes.com, nor should it.

Take a look at today’s edition by going to TimesLink and clicking on the e-edition button.

Each morning the paper will be available for your viewing on TimesLink as a convenience to you. Please explore it, enjoy it and let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Jack Klunder

Is this the begining of the end of print? From the looks of it, the ABC auditors can count this as part of circulation. Maybe we don't need as many presses if this thing takes off the way Sam has this planned.
