23 Oct, 1956 - Hungary Protests Against Soviet Rule
1956 : Tens of thousands of people take to the streets in Budapest, Hungary demanding end of Soviet rule.


23 Oct, 2002 - Hungary Protests Against Soviet Rule
2002 : Fifty Chechen rebels storm a Moscow Theater taking 7,000 hostages. The rebels had explosives strapped to their bodies and were demanding the withdrawal of Soviet Forces from Chechnya. Three days later after the death of two of the hostages Russian Special Forces stormed the building and during the raid most of the terrorists and 120 hostages were killed during the raid.
 

23 Oct, 1915 - U.S.A. Suffrage Movement
1915 : As part of the women's suffrage movement 25,000 women march up Fifth Avenue in New York City demanding the right to vote.
 

23 Oct, 1921 - U.S.A. Prohibition Laws
1921 : The prohibition laws are being flouted across the country because of the large amounts of booze by the millions of gallons is coming into the country from areas like the Bahamas, the rum runners have new fast power boats which run rings round the US revenue cutters and until the government provides fast patrol boats that can catch the smugglers. Another area that will need to be changed are the wages paid to prohibition agents (currently a prohibition agent is paid $145.00 per month) and the rum runners are offering bribes of $100,000 for them to turn the other way. If the government is serious about enforcing prohibition laws some changes and finance will need to be made available.

23 Oct, 1941 - U.S.A. "Dumbo"
1941 : Dumbo is released, the fourth film in the Disney animated features, Dumbo was based upon a children's book about an elephant with big ears, who is capable of flying by using them as wings.

1942 : Nazis are threatening French Skilled Workers with violence against their families if they do not come forward to work for Germany's War Industry.
 

23 Oct, 1948 - France Martial Law
1948 : France is moving closer to Martial Law following the communist Union Leaders calling for a general strike on Monday. The state has called up 50,000 troops to try to maintain law and order in the strike torn coal fields as more violence erupts and 2 more miners were killed yesterday.
 

23 Oct, 1950 - Yugoslavia Marshall Tito
1950 : Marshall Tito the Yugoslavia leader who is defying the Communist regime has asked the US and the UK for aid to help with the drought stricken country where many are facing starvation.

23 Oct, 1955 - U.S.A. Earthquake
1955 : Police in towns and cities within a 100 mile radius of San Francisco bay reported damage including one death. The quake came in two waves with the first causing a rolling motion then severe jolting motions that caused windows to crack and buildings to shudder the worst of the quake was recorded at 5.5 on the Richter scale.
 

23 Oct, 1963 - England "Doctor Who"
1963 : "Doctor Who" the British science fiction television program featuring "The Doctor" an alien time traveler who can travel through time and space in his time-ship / blue police box the TARDIS. The first program featured William Hartnell as "The Doctor." His enemy, the Daleks that become part of British Popular Culture ("EX-TER-MI-NATE!", "EX-TER-MI-NATE!") did not appear till December 1963. The Doctor has been played by a number of actors over the years.

23 Oct, 1973 - U.S.A. Gas Price Increase
October 23rd, 1973 : The price of gas increased by 400% and there were long queues at Gas Stations during the 1973 Oil Crisis. The crisis was caused by the war in the Middle East and OPEC deciding to cut oil supplies as a way of forcing the rest of the world to stop support for Israel. Toyota who had specialized in making smaller fuel efficient cars holds it's first national news conference in Los Angeles, California extolling the remarkable fuel efficiency of Toyota cars, the average American Car gave 15 MPG whereas the Japanese cars were achieving 25 MPG Plus. This provided the major Japanese manufacturers the springboard needed to make significant inroads into both the American and European cars markets.
 

23 Oct, 1973 - U.S.A. Watergate
1973 : After firing a number of senior staff including the special Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox earlier in the week President Richard Nixon agreed to turn in the subpoenaed tapes of his conversations surrounding the Watergate scandal.
 

23 Oct, 1974 - U.S.A. Retirement Law
October 23rd, 1974 : A 67 Year Old Professor Fights Against Mandatory Retirement Laws quoting documentation of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to help fight for equal protection under the law.
 

23 Oct, 1974 - Europe Anti Nuclear Demonstration
1974 : More than One Million anti-nuclear demonstrators joined forces yesterday to protest the deployment of US Nuclear Missiles on European soil. Protests happened simultaneously in in West Germany, London, Paris, Stockholm, Vienna and Rome.
 

23 Oct, 1983 - Lebanon Suicide Bomber
October 23rd, 1983 : A suicide bomber drives a truck packed with explosives into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 241 military personnel.
 

23 Oct, 1989 - Phillips 66 Chemical Complex Explosion
1989 : Part of the Phillips 66 Chemical Complex which manufactures high-density polyethylene in Houston, Texas has a series of explosions causing a massive fire at the plant and causing the loss of 23 lives and another 314 injuries.
 

23 Oct, 1998 - U.S.A. Abortion
October 23rd, 1998 : A sniper kills a doctor in his home, it is believed the doctor was killed because he provided abortions as this is the 4th attack on Abortion Doctors in the Upstate New York Area.

2001 : The IRA announces they have begun decommissioning weapons as agreed with the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning in August 2001.
 

23 Oct, 2001 - U.S.A. iPod
October 23rd, 2001 : Apple releases the first iPod capable of storing 1,000 songs. The iPod came with a 5 GB hard drive and was fully Mac compatible. Sales worldwide of the iPod now exceed 150 million and Apple iTunes has now sold over 5 billion songs worldwide.

2004 : With the presidential election campaigning now in full swing and no clear favorite all eyes are on the 6 swing states who hold the balance of power due to number of electoral votes each state has (electoral votes are related to the number of voters in each state) the 6 most important swing states for President George Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry are. 1. Florida - with 27 electoral votes 2. Pennsylvania - with 21 electoral votes 3. Ohio - with 20 electoral votes 4. Minnesota - with 10 electoral votes 5. Wisconsin - with 10 electoral votes 6. Iowa - with 7 electoral votes The winners of the largest numbers of these 6 states will most likely be the next President of the United States.
The final results in November gave: Florida, Ohio, Iowa (54 electoral votes - George Bush) and Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Wisconsin (41 electoral votes - John Kerry)

October 23rd, 2006 : Illinois Senator, Barack Obama, states that he is possibly considering running for the President of the United States in the 2008 presidential election. He said that he would partially base his decision on the outcome of mid-term elections in November 2006.
 

23 Oct, 2007 - Wildfires San Diego
2007 : 500,000 are evacuated from San Diego when a dozen wildfires fueled by strong 60 - 70 MPH Santa Ana winds destroying over 1000 homes and over 1/2 million acres have been burned to the ground so far. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has declared a state of emergency in seven counties.
 

23 Oct, 2007 - U.S.A. Space Shuttle Discovery
October 23rd, 2007 : Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-120) begins a 14-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS) to deliver the Harmony module and reconfigured part of the station in preparation for future assembly missions. The crew commanded by American Pam Melroy, included Mission Specialist Paolo A. Nespoli from Italy where Harmony was built.

23 Oct, 2009 - Switzerland Roman Polanski Extradition Request
2009 : The US has formally requested the extradition of Roman Polanski after he pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with an under-age girl in 1978 and then skipped bail.
 

23 Oct, 2011 - Strong Earthquake Hits Turkey
October 23rd, 2011 : An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck near the city of Van in Turkey. The earthquake caused a great amount of damage to the surrounding area and was followed by several strong aftershocks. Over five hundred people died as a result of this quake.
 

23 Oct, 2011 - Tunisia Holds First Election Since Revolution
2011 : Tunisia held its first free election since the Tunisian revolution. An estimated 90% of voters turned out at the polls to cast their ballots. Citizens voted for representatives to fill a 217-seat assembly that would appoint an interim government and draft a constitution.
 

23 Oct, 2012 - Polish President Exhumed
October 23rd, 2012 : The body of former Polish president Ryszard Kaczorowski, who died in a plane crash, was exhumed over fears that the body in his grave may have been a different person. The body was taken from a Warsaw church to have DNA testing done on it.
 

23 Oct, 2013 - India Accuses Pakistan of Kashmir Border Fire
2013 : India has claimed that Pakistani troops have fired across the Kashmir border in more than fifty locations recently. Pakistan did not comment, but it was reported that at least one soldier was killed and three others injured along the disputed border.
