Important Events From This day in History October 22th

 

1962 U.S.A. Cuban Missile Crisis

1962 : In a speech to the American people John F Kennedy told the audience that American Spy Planes had discovered Soviet Missile bases in Cuba, and that these missile bases when complete would be able to launch missiles capable of striking a number of US cities, he told the people that America could not allow these missile bases to be finished and would pursue any action necessary including military action to protect the nation. He informed the American people that the first stage was to place a naval quarantine on the waters around Cuba. This is known in history as the "Cuban Missile Crisis" and took the world to the brink of nuclear war with US forces going to DEFCON 2 in preparation to full scale war. America realized that the missile launchers construction was continuing and decided that a full scale invasion of Cuba would be needed to stop the missile bases being completed, the Soviets then transmitted a proposal that all missile bases in Cuba would be dismantled in exchange for the United States not invading Cuba and dismantling Americas missile bases in Turkey.

1910 UK Dr. Crippen

1910 : Dr. Crippen an American physician living in London is convicted at the Old Bailey for the murder of his 2nd wife Cora. After the murder and because he thought he would be arrested Crippin fled to Canada but was arrested when the ship he was on arrived in Canada and he was then transported back to England where he was tried and found guilty of the murder by poison of his wife. He was later hanged at Pentonville Prison in London.

1913 U.S.A. Mine Explosion

1913 : A coal mine explosion caused by a pocket of methane gas had been ignited by a miner’s lamp in Dawson, New Mexico, killing more than 250 miners.

1914 U.S.A. First Income Tax

1914 : Congress pass the Revenue Act mandating the first tax on incomes over $3,000.

1927 U.S.A. Floggings

1927 : The findings of a special grand jury in to the floggings carried out by members of the Ku Klux Klan in Cremshaw County Alabama ended with 102 indictments against men involved with the 20 lashings in that county. A public statement was also made that corruption by political figures in the area should also now go to Jury.

1934 FBI Gets Pretty Boy Floyd

1934 : Pretty Boy Floyd was finally shot by G-Men from Hoovers FBI team today in a corn field in Ohio after refusing to surrender. It is believed Floyd preferred death in a shoot out to death in the electric chair. Pretty Boy Floyd had added 4 new notches to his notorious fob watch in June when he attempted to free fellow robber Nash during a machine gun battle 4 G-Men agents were killed and Nash was killed in the crossfire in Kansas City and at that point the G-Men dedicated themselves to finding Floyd as the most wanted killer in America.

1947 Germany Marshall Plan

1947 : The Soviet Union leadership has called for the halt to American Imperialism in Europe and will never agree to the Marshall Plan for Germany which they believe is the enslavement of the German people to American economic expansion. The leadership warns the world that as well as having the atomic bomb America is also stockpiling biological weapons.

1949 Great Britain Economic Woes

1949 : A new study highlighting the problems facing the British government caused by the increase in it's welfare state and Nationalization of British Industry shows that the problems are getting worse as the public debt increases quicker than the national income. Below are figures in millions of pounds:

1913-1914 Total Debt 706 National Income 2,300

1919-1920 Total Debt 7,786 National Income 3,800

1930-1931 Total Debt 7,583 National Income 4,000

1938-1939 Total Debt 8,163 National Income 6,640

1948-1949 Total Debt 25,168 National Income 10,000

Many believe these figures are a recipe for disaster as any country must earn more than it borrows over the long term.

1958 Italy Aircrash

1958 : A British airliner and an Italian military jet collided four miles above Italy today leaving no survivors on the passenger plane but the pilot of the military jet managed to parachute to safety landing in the Mediterranean.

1966 Great Britain Spy Broken Out of Jail

1966 : The double agent, George Blake, escapes from prison in a daring break-out believed to have been masterminded by the Soviet Union.

1967 U.S.A. Vietnam War Demonstration

October 22nd, 1967 : Thousands of youthful antiwar demonstrators stormed the Pentagon today but were hurled back by armed soldiers and club swinging US Marshals.

1973 U.S.A. Watergate

1973 : Following President Nixon firing special prosecutor Archibald Cox and abolishing the Watergate Prosecution Force . Also the resignation of the Attorney General Elliot L Richardson and the firing of all his deputies the call for Impeachment of President Nixon is growing including members of both sides of the house and the first formal steps are expected to come on Tuesday when congress returns from the long weekend including veterans day.
