PATH - Making it Home

PATH will help 1,100 Veterans move into permanent housing this year. But many won't have the resources to buy basic furniture and supplies. Donate to help a Vet make it home, and the Steve and Rita Emerson Veterans Fund will match contributions up to $25,000.

Los Angeles Times Pfaffinger Foundation

A few weeks ago a select group of Los Angeles
Times employees and former employees received
a survey from the Pfaffinger Foundation.

Many employees were alarmed, assuming the Tribune Company had seized the sizeable charity, but this is not the case, yet.

I contacted the CEO of the foundation, Stephen C. Meier, for additional information and he replied:

Recently Pfaffinger has been writing individuals who retired or terminated at the former Times Mirror newspapers in recent years.  We ask them to contact us to see if they are eligible for assistance.  Experience has shown that some folks forget about Pfaffinger once they leave.

We would suggest that anyone who gets our questionnaire should fill it out and return it in the postage-paid envelope.

Best wishes,

Steve Meier

I wrote back to Mr. Meier regarding terminated employees seeking assistance, with no response at this writing, as I was denied aid because I was a black listed terminated Los Angeles Times employee. Has the Pfaffinger Foundation realized many terminated employees were let go to ease the financial burden facing the newspaper, and not the workers the Tribune Company has portrayed many to be?

As soon as I hear something from Mr. Meier regarding the status of terminated employees I will share with you.

LIFE SURVIVOR AND HEALTH & G FITNESS GURU MICHAEL ROBERTS

"Growing up with divorced, alcoholic and abusive parents, I turned to drugs and alcohol at a early age. With no discipline and the freedom to do whatever I wanted, alcohol and drugs became my way of life. On Dec 5th, 1985 at the age of 17, I felt as if the only way out was to end my life, I bought a 12 pack of beer and stood overlooking a 250 foot cliff. I began thinking and said to myself “What a relief it would be for my parents to know that the mistake they had once made in me, was no longer around.” As I stood looking down, I heard a voice, I turned to look back and saw a police officer standing as he said “It’s not worth it please don’t do it.” I then looked at him and said “I’m sorry” and then I JUMPED!

Little did I know I would jump into the arms of a angel that the Good Lord Above would send to me. Falling and tumbling down to the bottom, I was helicoptered to a hospital with Doctors saying “This one will not live.” I slipped into a comma and began the fight of my life, having to learn to walk, talk and write again, having many broken bones to heal, remarkably 2 years of rehab later and with nothing but scars to show, I made a full recovery.

This is when health and fitness came into my life and 25 years later has made a difference in me thinking how life is so precious. I want my story to help those people around the world who are leading that same dark path that I once choose and to reach out to the parents, simply put “Children See, Children Do.” I grew up not caring about life, health and fitness changed my way of thinking and SAVED MY LIFE!"

This is what we union thugs do for the jobless

Some thug.

We buy food and distribute it to workers whose earned benefits were arbitrarily cut off by the state of Georgia.

This spring, the Department of Labor suddenly cut off the unemployment benefits earned by 64,000 Georgians who had no work during the summer. They were employed by educational institutions or by companies that contracted with educational institutions.

Lots of food for lots of hunger.
Velmar Hightower, a food service technician for Aramark at Spellman College, had depended on her unemployment benefits for 20 summers. She was shocked when the Georgia Department of Labor told her at the end of May that she no longer qualified. Like tens of thousands of others, she'd had no time to plan for a summer without income.

The workers are facing eviction, repossession and hunger. There is no work for them in Georgia. There is no pay.

Teamsters from Local 728 in Atlanta bought $3,000 worth of food and set up a food distribution center. Several hundred union members whose unemployment benefits were cut picked up groceries at the IBEW Hall in Savannah on Saturday and Wednesday. Local 728 will also deliver bags of groceries to the homes of 50 unemployed school bus drivers at Fort Stewart later this week.

Remember "Thug" stands for "those helpful union guys (and gals)."
