Scientists had other methods in mind but cautioned that they, like the whales, were wandering into uncharted territory.
Sad:
"We've never had a baleen whale this far up a freshwater river," Folkens said, adding that rescuers have never dealt with a stranded and injured cow and calf.
"We can't have very high expectations of a positive outcome," he said. "This is relatively new for all of us. It's essentially an experiment."
