Australia’s government is offering grants of up to $1 million (more than $740,000 in U.S. dollars) to small and regional publishers, NewsMediaWorks reports. NewsMediaWorks is an organization representing Australia’s news media publishers.
The Regional and Small Publishers Innovation Fund will allow companies with an annual revenue of less than $30 million ($22 million U.S.) to apply for the grants. In total, $48 million (around $35.5 U.S.) will be available in the fund over three years.
Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said the grants would help publishers form new business models to stay competitive.
“We need to sustain quality journalism in our regions to ensure all Australians can access quality local news that is relevant to them,” Fifield said.
To be eligible, publishers must use the money to do public interest journalism to help Australians.
The application deadline is July 27.
