Judge vacates order making LA Times change story

On July 17 a federal judge rescinded his earlier order requiring the Los Angeles Times to take information out of a story about a plea agreement involving a police officer, the paper reported.
The agreement was supposed to have been filed under seal, but it was accidentally made public on PACER, an online database for federal court documents, the Times reported.
Following the July 14 order from U.S. District Judge John F. Walter, The Times changed the article to remove information about the sealed document. The Times filed an emergency motion night to stay the judge’s order. “We believe that once material is in the public record, it is proper and appropriate to publish it if it is newsworthy,” said Norman Pearlstine, executive editor of the Los Angeles Times.
More than 55 news organizations signed a letter supporting The Times in the matter.
